In August 2007, a 16-year-old boy took his father's Skoda out for a drive across Mumbai and never came home. Adnan Patrawala was the son of a wealthy businessman, a teenager with a fast car, a wide circle of friends and an Orkut profile that told anyone looking exactly what his family was worth. The men he went to meet that night were not strangers. He had met them at a mall, added them online, spent time with them. Within hours his father was taking calls from people demanding 2 crore rupees. Within a day, every news channel in the country was running the kidnapping live, and the men holding Adnan were watching it happen.
