As Halbrecht’s blood lingered on the surface and his body was carried away by the current, the Conclave moved quickly to contain the narrative. Official records called it error. Accident. Personal failure.

But along the docks, in the fields, and in the whispered margins of older texts, another interpretation began to take shape.

The river had judged.
