In this week's podcast, we explore the next sermon in the summer series of "Holy Disruptors: How Christian Saints, Prophets, and Mystics led in times of Difficulty".
On Sunday, July 27, 2025, the 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Rev. Mark Burnham, Senior Pastor of Grace Presbyterian Church, Walnut Creek, CA, preached a sermon entitled, "The Bonhoeffer Question".
Scriptures
- First Reading – Isaiah 50:4-9
- Second Reading – Mark 8:31-38
Deitrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945) was a German Lutheran pastor, theologian, and anti-Nazi dissident known for his profound contributions to Christian theology and his unwavering resistance to the Nazi regime.
Born on February 4, 1906, in Breslau, Germany (now Wrocław, Poland), he pursued theology studies in Tübingen and Berlin and earned his doctorate at the age of 21. Bonhoeffer became a pivotal figure in the Confessing Church, a movement opposed to Nazi interference in church affairs.
His works, including The Cost of Discipleship and Life Together, emphasized the importance of authentic Christian community and costly grace. Beyond his theological influence, Bonhoeffer's commitment to social justice and opposition to Hitler led him to join a group plotting to overthrow the Nazi regime.
Arrested in 1943, Bonhoeffer was executed at the Flossenbürg concentration camp on April 9, 1945, just weeks before the end of World War II. His legacy endures through his writings and his example of faith and courage in the face of tyranny.
Thank you for listening. Join us next week on August 3 for the next sermon.
