  • Mothman Legacy: West Virginia’s Winged Harbinger
    2025/04/21

A dying chief's curse. A winged creature with glowing red eyes. The tragic collapse of a bridge. All these elements converge in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, creating one of America's most enduring supernatural mysteries - the legend of Mothman.

We journey back to 1777, when betrayal and bloodshed sowed the seeds for generations of misfortune as Shawnee Chief Cornstalk uttered his final, chilling words. Nearly two centuries later, something strange emerged from the shadows. Witnesses described a seven-foot-tall humanoid with massive wings that could keep pace with cars traveling over 100 mph, leaving terror in its wake. As sightings increased throughout 1966, mysterious Men in Black arrived, warning people to remain silent about what they'd seen.

Then came December 15, 1967 - the day the Silver Bridge collapsed during rush hour, claiming 46 lives. Was this the culmination of Cornstalk's curse? Had Mothman appeared as a harbinger, trying to warn the townspeople? The timing seemed too perfect to be coincidental. Yet the story doesn't end there. Similar creatures have reportedly been spotted before disasters worldwide - Chernobyl, Chicago, even before 9/11 according to some accounts.

Whether you believe Mothman is an interdimensional being, a misidentified natural creature, or a manifestation of collective anxiety, the impact on our culture is undeniable. From John Keel's seminal book to Hollywood adaptations, from internet memes to Build-A-Bear plushies with suspiciously well-endowed backsides, Mothman reminds us that some mysteries persist at the edges of our understanding, challenging what we think we know about reality.

Is he trying to warn us? Is he simply observing? Or is something else entirely at play in the shadows of Point Pleasant? Whatever you believe, the legend continues to unfold as new sightings are reported even today.

  • Well-Aged Horror Movies
    2025/04/14

What makes a horror film withstand the ravages of time? When special effects grow dated and cultural references fade, what qualities allow certain movies to continue chilling new generations of viewers?

The Black Curtain Club takes a deep dive into horror films that have aged like fine wine—or perhaps more appropriately, like well-preserved corpses. From the devastating psychological impact of The Mist's unforgettable ending to the practical effects masterclass of John Carpenter's The Thing, we explore the elements that give these films their enduring power to frighten.

Our passionate discussion reveals how Stephen King adaptations tap into universal fears, why Asian horror remakes successfully translated cultural terrors for Western audiences, and how films like American Psycho continue finding new devotees decades after release. We debate whether practical effects hold up better than CGI, why certain sound designs like The Grudge's iconic death rattle become permanently embedded in our nightmares, and how directors like Kubrick created environments that become characters in themselves.

Whether you're nostalgic for the slashers of the 80s, appreciate the psychological depth of films like Silence of the Lambs, or recognize how Night of the Living Dead established the zombie blueprint that influences media to this day, this episode celebrates the films that continue to haunt us long after the credits roll.

Ready to revisit the horror classics that refuse to die? Join us for a blood-curdling conversation that might have you checking under your bed tonight. After all, the best scares never truly age—they just find new ways to terrify.

  • Deadly Women & Dark History: Bathory & Tofana
    2025/03/31

Two notorious women from history share eerily similar stories that challenge our understanding of female villains and the patriarchal societies that condemned them.

    • Giulia Tofana created "Aqua Tofana" in 17th century Italy, a tasteless poison that killed approximately 600 abusive husbands
    • Her poison business operated as a covert pyramid scheme disguised as a cosmetics shop, with dosing instructions similar to modern medicine labels
    • Elizabeth Bathory, the Hungarian "Blood Countess," allegedly tortured and killed hundreds of young women in the late 16th century
    • Bathory was never given a trial, and evidence against her appears politically motivated as King Matthias owed substantial debts to her family
    • Both women were raised in extremely violent environments, married off as children, and showed signs of trauma and possible mental illness
    • The stories of powerful women throughout history often become exaggerated or sensationalized, similar to false narratives about Marie Antoinette and Catherine the Great
    • Many of the most extreme accusations against both women appeared decades or centuries after their deaths, suggesting possible historical distortion
    • The podcast hosts suggest the truth likely falls somewhere between complete innocence and the monstrous legends that survive today

Listen to the Black Curtain Club every Monday for new episodes where we explore the darker side of history with a curious, thoughtful approach.

    • The Xenomorph could secretly love being tickled, especially with its second mouth
    • Pennywise might be into anal play as a bottom, while Dracula has a fascination with long hair
    • Frankenstein's monster would enjoy electric play or lactation due to his motherless origins
    • Swamp Thing unanimously receives water sports as his kink, while Predator is deemed a "brattamer"
    • Wolfman might actually be roleplaying his werewolf persona as a kink rather than being a real monster
    • Jason Voorhees has an abduction/seduction fetish with hopes of Stockholm syndrome
    • Freddy Krueger's knife play tendencies are particularly notable in Freddy vs. Jason scenes
    • Leatherface loves amputees, "loves making them, loves using them in crafts"
