The lock-keeper at Saltford was standing on the bank of the River Avon on the afternoon of Saturday 27th Feb 1875, when his attention was attracted by an object floating down with the stream. A glance showed him that was the body of a human being, and carefully watched the corpse as it was carried along by the river, waiting for an opportunity to bring it to the bank.
