  • TAS 165 – Brand Rescue Mission! Ben Leonard on building a $6m brand, selling it, and buying it back 5 years later to start all over again.
    2025/07/12

In the 1970’s and 80’s there was a famous Australian businessman, Kerry Packer who sold a popular TV station he owed to an upcoming businessman, Alan Bond for 1.2 Billion in 1987.

In 1990: Packer bought it back for only A$250 million, after Bond’s empire collapsed under financial pressure just 3 years later.

This deal became legendary in Australian business history. Packer famously quipped:

“You only get one Alan Bond in your lifetime, and I’ve had mine.”

Ben Leonard sold his $6m P/A Brand, Beast Gear to aggregator, Thrasio in 2019. Thrasio has since filed for bankruptcy and Ben was able to negotiate to buy back Beast Gear after it had been completely driven into the ground.

Today’s story has everything, how Ben grew Beast Gear from nothing to $6m in 4 years to how the aggregator destroyed everything that had made Beast Gear such a great brand.

Now Ben has it back and is publicly documenting the rescue mission to re-build Beast Gear to its former glory.

Watch the mission on YouTube here:

  • TAS 162 – Amazon to Bakers Delight. 23 YO Dominic from Brisbane and his Amazing Journey
    2024/08/10

Dominic from Think 4 Earth started selling reusable bread bags on Amazon USA just 5 short years ago, straight out of High School.

    As you’ll hear in today’s conversation, Dominic’s a bit of a self starter and a hell of a go-getter!

About 9 months ago, he sent a package of his bread bags (and a nice letter) to Baker’s Delight (Australia’s largest nationwide bakery chain).

Fast forward to today and his bags are in 50 stores across Australia.

He still sells his bags at the markets on the weekend to stay in touch with his customers, and has huge plans for the future.

This is a great chat you don’t want to miss!

  • TAS 161 – Forward Contracts, Canton Fair, Supplier Relations and auditing your Supply Chain. Jim Vrondas from WorldFirst explains.
    2024/07/26

Jim Vrondas from World First joins me today and we chat about the importance of Supplier Relations, actually visiting your suppliers rather than relying just on Alibaba for your sourcing needs from afar.

At the Amazon Collective back in March, Jim did a presentation about Forward Contracts which sound might sound a bit ‘dry’ but in reality can eliminate your currency movement risks and is super easy to set up.

Speaking of Jim, he invited me to speak alongside other ecommerce experts at the free World First event next Thursday 1st of August. If you’d like to register for free, head over to www.theaustralianseller.com/worldfirst

  • TAS 159 – Amazon is Taking on Temu, Shien, Tik Tok etc, and what this means for 3rd Party Sellers with Steven Selikoff
    2024/07/13

Steven Selikoff returns to the Podcast this week to fill us in on the latest development by Amazon to try and take on the Chinese eCommerce juggernauts with the likes of Temu, Shien, AliExpress, Tik Tok and others.

These platforms have been taking advantage of a customs rule known as De Minimis, which, in most countries, allows cheap, small parcel deliveries from China and other countries to be excluded from customs duties and tariffs.

Us 3rd Party sellers, shipping goods in bulk to FBA are generally subject to duties, taxes and tariffs before we can even sell our products, so we’re at a bit of a disadvantage.

Steven says that Amazon is courting factories in China right now, and inviting them to participate in Amazon’s new ‘factory direct’ program.

What form or shape Amazon’s new program will take is uncertain. We don’t know if it will be a new standalone website platform, or if it’ll be integrated into Amazon.com somehow.

    Time will tell.

Today, Steven offers tips for 3rd Party sellers to remain in business as the stormclouds gather around us! If you’re still selling ‘Me too’ products, you won’t stand a chance.

Steven’s Canton Fair Trip is coming up in October, so if you want to stay ahead and join Steven on his China Product Sourcing and Development Trip, simply visit www.cantonfair2024.com and use the coupon code Chris500 to save $500!

  • TAS 158 – Selling on Amazon India. Peter Everett from Australian Brand, Nanoman explains
    2024/07/01

My good friend Peter Everett joined me for a chat about how he’s been gradually expand his small brand around the world using Amazon. Today we chat about how he got started in the USA, before setting up in Australia. From Australia, the next Amazon stop was Singapore and then onto Amazon UK.

In March 2023 he listed some of his products on Amazon India, and the results blew him away.

As a marketplace, Amazon India is a sleeping giant, so if you can through all the red tape and taxes, you may find it to be the most profitable Marketplace you can sell in.

This coming Thursday 4th July, there’s an Amazon meetup down here in Melbourne, from 5pm until 8.00pm at the Emerald Peacock bar in Lonsdale Street. Feel free to come join us there whether you’re an Amazon seller or not!

I’m also speaking in Sydney at a World First event on the 1st of August. There will be an event landing page shortly, so stay tuned for more details on that one…

…and Jamie and Michael from End Game Network are holding the Southern Seller Fest again this year in Singapore on the 19th and 20th of November. Can’t wait for that one!
