What happens when you stop allowing a diagnosis - or other people's perceptions of it - to silence your voice?
In this episode of The Auburn Conversations, I’m joined by Dene Dubois, founder of BPD Raw, memoirist and lived-experience advocate, for an open conversation about borderline personality disorder (BPD), childhood trauma, mental health, stigma and turning lived experience into purpose.
Dene shares openly about growing up in a difficult family environment, being diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, experiencing discrimination, and eventually deciding to use those experiences to speak up for others who often feel misunderstood.
We also talk about BPD Raw and Dene's work to create a space where people living with BPD - and those who support them - can share their experiences without shame.
In this conversation we explore:
✨ Living with borderline personality disorder (BPD)
✨ Childhood trauma and how our early experiences can stay with us
✨ The stigma surrounding BPD and mental health
✨ Feeling misunderstood by the people around you
✨ Emotional triggers, anger and what Dene describes as "splitting"
✨ Relationships, trust and fear of rejection
✨ Radical self-accountability and understanding our reactions
✨ Why lived experience deserves a voice
✨ The creation of BPD Raw
✨ Dene's memoirs The Places I Didn't Belong and Maybe I Did Belong
✨ A new book project bringing together raw, unfiltered letters from people affected by BPD
✨ Personal experiences of mental health treatment and finding what helps
✨ Turning pain into purpose
One of the most powerful themes running through our conversation is the importance of being heard.
Dene believes that people living with BPD should not have to hide who they are or feel ashamed of their experiences. Through BPD Raw, writing and podcasting, Dene is creating space for those voices to be heard.
As Dene says:🧡 "Without our voices, the stigma will not change."
