In the earliest days of the iPhone App Store, nobody had cracked mobile-first hotel booking. Same-day rooms were nearly impossible to find, they weren't discounted, and hotels had no way to sell inventory that was about to expire worthless. Sam Shank, founder and former CEO of HotelTonight, built the app that solved both problems in a single ten-week sprint on roughly $500,000, mostly salaries, growing it into a company that raised more than $100 million before Airbnb acquired it in 2019.
