In the earliest days of the iPhone App Store, nobody had cracked mobile-first hotel booking. Same-day rooms were nearly impossible to find, they weren't discounted, and hotels had no way to sell inventory that was about to expire worthless. Sam Shank, founder and former CEO of HotelTonight, built the app that solved both problems in a single ten-week sprint on roughly $500,000, mostly salaries, growing it into a company that raised more than $100 million before Airbnb acquired it in 2019.
John Richards, Travel Tech Concierge and host of The Architects of Travel, talks with Sam about the distribution-first thinking behind HotelTonight's rise, why he thinks AI executive assistants are about to upend how online travel agencies make money, and what drew him to advise Nuitée today. It's a founder's case for distribution that still holds up as the industry shifts from app stores to AI.
The Architects of Travel is produced by TruStory FM.
