"When a hot button topic comes up in conversation, I don't push it away. I want to be there. I want to be in that space of awareness, discomfort, hope. But I know that emotions rise before anything else. So I usually say something like, oh, my God, this topic always gets pretty heated."

I think that immediately when we hear something that we disagree with, our first impulse is just to correct someone and to tell them why they're wrong. But instead it's a lot better just to ask more curious questions, such as, how did you come to that view? That's interesting. Can you tell me more?"

"If something bad happens nationally that impacts 10 people, there's no doubt that it is sometimes a bad thing. But if we don't know about the 10 good things that are happening in our backyard, then it becomes harder to be optimistic about things. So one way to de escalate that is to think more locally and to say what's happening on the national level, international level. These are things that I can't control every day."

"Just because somebody agrees with a political candidate on a national level doesn't mean that they necessarily subscribe to every last thing that they agree with or don't agree with."
