概要

Ever wonder really lies beneath the Great Sphinx? What secrets are hidden in Tesla’s lost notebooks? And seriously, where did they put the Ark of the Covenant? Hey, I’m Luke and spend my time writing adventure novels and daydreaming about ancient mysteries (Probably 30% writing, 70% daydreaming). The Adventure Story Podcast is my excuse to talk with the dreamers and the doers of adventure—those who craft epic quests from their laptops, and real-world explorers who laugh in the face of GPS. Plus, I'll share some of the misadventures that inspired my books and look back on some of the classic adventure stories we all know and love. Each episode is part Indiana Jones, part behind-the-scenes adventure novel, and part late-night conspiracy session—but with better jokes and less tin foil. *Disclaimer: This podcast is based on true events. Maybe. Possibly. Okay, probably not. But that's half the fun. • Spies, Smugglers and Misfits: The Lawless History of Tangier with Sean McLachlan
    2026/05/13
What makes a city the perfect setting for an adventure story?Imagine a city where a spy could disappear into a medieval medina, where ancient ruins sit in the shadow of colonial mansions, and where two continents seem to tug at the air around you. That city is Tangier and in this episode, archaeologist and writer Sean McLachlan brings it to life.Sean has spent months at a time there researching his Moroccan Mysteries series, and he knows the city the way a detective knows a crime scene: layer by layer. We go from its days as a lawless international zone, governed simultaneously by France, Spain, Britain, Belgium, and Italy, to the modern port city it's become, unpacking what made it such a gift to writers of adventure fiction. The history alone reads like a novel. Drugs and homosexuality were legal when banned almost everywhere else. Anti-Franco republicans shared streets with former Nazis. Rival cafés in the Petit Socco were known to throw glasses at each other across the square. And in the antique shops today, you can still find 1950s police arrest records filled out in triplicate: English, French, and Spanish. If you're drawn to cities where history hasn't quite been cleaned up, this one's for you.In This Episode, We Explore:Geography as character – Tangier sits between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, 14km from Spain. That proximity has shaped everything from its languages to its smuggling routes. The international zone experiment – from 1924 to 1956, multiple world powers co-governed Tangier under a legal framework so permissive it became one of the wildest cities in Africa.Espionage as backdrop – Cold War fears of Soviet influence south of the Strait of Gibraltar meant spies were everywhere, and the French and Spanish were quietly rooting for Moroccan independence to keep the Russians out.Layered architecture, layered identity – the Casbah, the Medina, colonial mansions on the Marshan ridge, and now Gulf Arab palaces where Europeans once lived.Real objects, real stories – from glass plate negatives found in a dusty box to 1950s police records pulled from antique shops, Tangier hands you material that fiction can't fully invent. Why authentic setting elevates fiction – when your readers can feel that you know where every street turns and why every cafe has a political leaning, the story earns its credibility.Episode Timestamps01:46 – A City Between Two Continents (and why 14km matters)03:52 – The International Zone: How Six Countries Co-Governed One City06:49 – Spies, Smugglers, and the Police Chief Who Learned to Look the Other Way12:36 – People, Politics, and the Question of Who Gets to Be Moroccan15:47 – Modern Tangier: Africa's Largest Port and a City Being Rediscovered17:26 – Antique Shops, Glass Plate Negatives, and What History Leaves Behind21:05 – Books That Capture the Real Tangier23:42 – The Moroccan Mysteries: A Communist Detective Who Stole a Bank CaseLinks Referenced in This Episode:Sean's WebsiteGot a Story Idea?If you have a mystery, legend, or adventure you’d like me to explore, drop a comment or email me at hello@lukerichardsonauthor.com. • The House of a Thousand Spies: Teufelsberg, Berlin's Most Extraordinary Secret
    2026/05/06
In the forests west of Berlin, a hill rises above the treeline that shouldn't exist. It was built by hand from the rubble of 400,000 bombed buildings. Beneath it, entombed in concrete, lies an unfinished Nazi military college so solidly built that the Allies couldn't demolish it — so they buried it instead. On top of all of that, the stood one of the most important spy stations in the world. From 1961 to 1991, over a thousand operatives worked around the clock at Field Station Berlin — known to locals as Teufelsberg, Devil's Mountain — intercepting Soviet and East German military communications, feeding intelligence to the NSA, the CIA, and British intelligence. Most of what they heard is still classified. Then the Berlin Wall fell, the agencies packed up and left, and Teufelsberg was reclaimed by the forest. In this episode, I visit Teufelsberg — climbing the hill, stepping through the chain-link fence, and standing inside the radar domes where some of the Cold War's most sensitive intelligence work took place. Some places hold their secrets long after the people who kept them are gone; Teufelsberg is one of them.My book BERLIN UNDERGROUND was party inspired by Teufelsberg and other places in Berlin. Tap here to read it.Here's what Berlin Underground is all about: A missing fashion tycoon. Rival gangs at war. A city built on secrets. When Leo and Allissa take what looks like a straightforward case, they’re pulled into the darkest corners of Berlin — from its underground techno clubs to the eerie ruins of Teufelsberg, an abandoned Cold War listening post looming over the city. But someone will do anything to keep the truth buried. With Berlin’s most dangerous man closing in, Leo and Allissa find themselves trapped in a deadly game of violence, betrayal, and shifting loyalties. And as the pressure mounts, the bond between them is pushed to breaking pointBecause this case is bigger than a disappearance. It’s a secret people have killed to protect for decades — and if Leo and Allissa don’t uncover it in time, Berlin may bury them with it.Takeaways:The origins of Teufelsberg, constructed from rubble over two decades, illustrate human resilience in the face of destruction.Field Station Berlin served as a crucial intelligence hub during the Cold War, monitoring Soviet communications. The evolution of Teufelsberg from a military site to an artistic space reflects the changing narrative of Berlin. The intricate history of surveillance at Teufelsberg remains largely classified, shrouding its operations in mystery.Local efforts transformed Teufelsberg into a ski slope in the 1950s, showcasing adaptability amid urban challenges.Today, Teufelsberg stands as an open-air gallery, demonstrating how history can inspire contemporary creativity.Got a Story Idea?If you have a mystery, legend, or adventure you’d like me to explore, drop a comment or email me at hello@lukerichardsonauthor.com. • The Forgotten Man Behind Tesla’s Experiments with Patric Ryan
    2026/04/29
Why do forgotten figures make such powerful stories? Some see Nikola Tesla as a genius. Others see a myth. But what if part of his story has been missing all along? In this episode, I’m joined by Patric Ryan, who has spent years uncovering not just Tesla’s work, but the people around him. Because Tesla didn’t work alone. We explore the experiments, the risks, and the ideas that shaped the modern world… alongside the story of Kolman Czito, the assistant who saved Tesla’s life, then disappeared from history. From an unmarked grave to a rediscovered legacy, this is a story about the people history forgets and what happens when someone decides to go looking for them.We also explore how stories like this sit right on the edge of history and mystery. Why some figures become legends while others disappear and what happens when someone starts searching for the missing pieces. This conversation isn’t just about Tesla, it’s about rediscovering the gaps in history, and the stories still waiting to be told.If you’re drawn to hidden history, forgotten names, and real-world mysteries that feel stranger than fiction, you’re going to enjoy this one.In this Episode, We Explore: Forgotten figures can be just as compelling as famous ones – sometimes the most powerful stories are the ones history almost lost.Mystery fuels engagement – gaps in the historical record invite curiosity, interpretation, and storytelling.Real-world stories can feel like fiction – especially when they involve secrecy, erased records, and unanswered questions. It’s always about people – even in stories about great inventors, it’s the human connections that bring everything to life.Episode Timestamps: 02:05 - Patric’s Tesla Origin Story03:50 - Who Was Nikola Tesla05:34 - War of Currents Explained07:29 - World’s Fair to Colorado12:13 - Wireless Power and Coverup14:53 - The Assistant Who Saved Him17:17 - Missing Memorial to Statue22:22 - Czito’s Legacy After Tesla24:57 - FBI Seizure and Secrets27:25 - Marking Forgotten Graves29:57 - Why Tesla Matters to PatricGot a Story Idea?If you have a mystery, legend, or adventure you’d like me to explore, drop a comment or email me at hello@lukerichardsonauthor.com.
