**The 50/50 Astrologer** is a podcast for a clear, no-nonsense approach to astrology. Each episode explores the balance between astrological technique and real human experience — the idea that good astrology is part knowledge, part relationship. Whether you're a practicing astrologer, a serious student, or simply curious about how astrology works in real life, the focus here is practical application, thoughtful dialogue, and honest reflection. This is astrology as a living process, not a performance. The podcast is free and stands on its own. • EP 12: How Much Astrology Do You Actually Need?
    2026/10/12

How much information do you actually need before you can read what's already in front of you?

Astrology offers an enormous range of techniques, points and systems to explore. But does adding more information necessarily make us better astrologers?

In this episode of The 50/50 Astrologer, I challenge you to consider what would happen if you had to give a reading using only the fundamentals: planets, signs, houses and major aspects. Could you still give a good reading? And more importantly, could you do it well?

We explore the difference between information and relevance, why understanding what a client wants can change the entire direction of a consultation, and whether we sometimes use technical complexity to compensate for uncertainty or a lack of confidence.

We also examine something I call performing astrology—when demonstrating how much astrology we know begins to take priority over using that knowledge to help the person sitting in front of us.

This isn't an argument against learning more astrology. It's an invitation to think about what comes next in our development as astrologers.

Perhaps the next skill we need isn't another technique. Perhaps it's better judgement, stronger communication, more effective listening, or simply knowing what to leave out.

If you already knew enough astrology, what would you have to work on next?

  • Episode 11 - When Your Strengths Work Against You
    2026/09/07

What if some of the patterns we struggle with aren't weaknesses at all, but strengths that have continued doing their job long after we needed them?

In this episode of The 50/50 Astrologer, I explore a more introspective approach to working with recurring patterns in astrology readings. Rather than immediately searching the chart for the placement responsible for a problem, what happens when we involve the client in understanding how that pattern developed, what purpose it may have served, and which parts of the chart have been recruited to maintain it?

We look at the difference between survival instinct and survival mode, how our strongest astrological resources can become over-recruited, and why something that once helped us adapt can eventually begin limiting our choices.

Most importantly, this is an episode about the craft of reading astrology: listening to the client, asking better questions, and using the chart as a system of resources rather than simply a collection of explanations.

Sometimes our greatest strengths can also become our greatest limitations—not because there's anything wrong with them, but because they haven't realised their job is finished.

  • Episode 10: When the Astrologer Gets in the Way
    2026/08/21

Every astrologer brings two things to a reading: the chart and themselves.

Our experience, relationships, beliefs, expectations and scars can make us better astrologers. They give us perspective and help create the unique interpretation we bring to a chart. But those same experiences can also influence what we think we're seeing.

In this episode of The 50/50 Astrologer, Damian McKinnon explores the fine line between interpretation and projection in astrology.

What happens when we start with a conclusion and work backwards into the chart? How does confirmation bias affect the way we read our own astrology? And when we're reading for somebody else, how much of what we see belongs to the client, the chart — and how much belongs to us?

We also explore how this changes as astrologers become more experienced, and why developing self-awareness may be just as important as developing astrological knowledge.
