Most pastors are told to choose: the pulpit or the marketplace. The 40/40 Pastor's Podcast exists for those who refuse.

If you spend half your life leading a congregation and the other half running a business, building a career, or operating in the marketplace you're not divided. You're deployed. But no one prepared you for this. Seminary didn't cover payroll. Business school didn't cover Sunday morning grief. And most pastor podcasts assume you're fully funded and full-time.

This show is for the leader who preaches on Sunday and negotiates on Monday. For the church planter who's also a contractor, a consultant, a developer, or an entrepreneur. For the bi-vocational pastor who's tired of feeling like a second-class minister and ready to see the dual calling for what it actually is, a prophetic gift to the local church and the marketplace both.

Each month, the 40/40 Pastor's Podcast brings you honest conversations, real stories, and practical wisdom on identity, time, money, ministry, and the gritty beauty of a life lived fully in both worlds.

You don't have to choose. You were made for both.

    2026/10/14
Send us Fan MailHow do bi-vocational leaders break generational cycles while protecting their marriage and family? Pastor Arthur J. James sits down with Tony J. Reese, former megachurch men's pastor, multi-site campus pastor, entrepreneur, author, and marriage coach, for a transparent conversation about turning pain into purpose, restoring a marriage, and building a kingdom legacy at home, in ministry, and in the marketplace. Season 1, Episode 6: Breaking the Cycle: Building a Kingdom Legacy You Didn't InheritLast episode, we said time management is a theology. This episode, we take that conviction home. Pastor Arthur J. James welcomes Tony J. Reese, serial entrepreneur, greatness coach, author, and former men's, marriage and family, and campus pastor, for one of the most transparent conversations of the season.Tony lost his father at age three and watched his mother struggle with alcohol. Divorce ran through both his family and his wife Odessa's family. Today, Tony and Odessa have been married 24 years, are raising five children, and are building the legacy neither of them inherited. Along the way, Tony gives practical tools for marriage rhythms, men's ministry on a small budget, and handling money across two worlds. In This Episode[00:00] Welcome and introducing Tony J. • The 40/40 Pastor's Podcast S1 E5 - "Your Calendar Is a Confession: Why Time Management Is a Theology"
    2026/09/09

    Send us Fan Mail

It was somewhere around 6 in the morning. The hotel shift was not over. The relief manager had not arrived. And the ministry commitment that had been carefully planned and protected on the calendar was about to be overridden by a world that still had to be managed.

If you have ever stood in that moment, when two callings collided and one of them had to wait, this episode was built for you.

In Episode 5 of the 40/40 Bi-Vocational Pastors Podcast, Pastor Arthur J. James delivers solo teaching drawn from more than 30 years of bi-vocational ministry. This episode has two movements. The first is theological: your calendar is not just a scheduling tool. It is a confession. It reveals what you actually believe about God, about your calling, and about yourself, based not on what you say is important but on where your hours actually go.

The second movement is practical. Pastor James unpacks the PREACH framework, developed and published in his book Preaching Through Pain, a six-step acrostic for showing up prepared in any room, under any pressure, with whatever preparation time you actually have. It is the framework that has carried him through three decades of last-minute pulpit moments, calendar disruptions, and mornings when the plan did not survive contact with the day.

If Episode 3 named the Two-World Tax and Episode 4 addressed the loneliness of leadership, Episode 5 hands you the tool. Practical. Proven, and built for the 40/40 life.

“Your calendar is a confession. It tells the truth about you even when you would rather tell a different story.”

    In This Episode

    • Why how you manage your time is a direct reflection of what you actually believe about God

    • The difference between a pastor who knows about God and a pastor who knows God, and how the calendar exposes which one you are

    • Why personal spiritual formation is oxygen for the bi-vocational pastor and the one non-negotiable that never moves off the schedule

    • The PREACH framework, letter by letter, with direct application to the 40/40 life

    • What the hotel story at 6:30 in the morning taught Pastor James about the only calendar item that disruption cannot touch

    • What bi-vocational pastors need to do differently by Monday morning

    The PREACH Framework

P Pray — Surrender the moment before you enter it.

R Remember Your Purpose — Ministry from assignment, not performance for approval.

E Expect Problems — Disruption is a variable you already accounted for.

A Affirm Who You Are in God — Your calling is not revoked because you are tired.

C Commit as Much as You Can to Memory — Be present with people, not dependent on the page.

H Have Fun in Your Calling — Genuine joy in your assignment is visible and contagious.

  • You Weren't Meant to Lead Alone | The Loneliness of Leadership: Building a Sounding Board When You Can't Be Transparent with Anyone
    2026/08/12

    Send us Fan Mail

Every leader knows the feeling. Surrounded by people all week and known by almost none of them. For bi-vocational pastors carrying two worlds at once, that isolation is one of the quietest and heaviest costs your congregation never sees. It's a line item on the Two-World Tax that nobody warns you about.

In this episode, Pastor Arthur J. James sits down with coach and ministry leader Denise Mock to name that loneliness out loud and do something about it. Denise has spent more than 36 years in leadership, six of them as a pastor, all while building a coaching practice on the side. She knows firsthand how rare it is to find someone you trust enough to be fully transparent with, and she's built her ministry around helping pastors, church staff, and women in leadership say the things that get stuck in their heads.

Together they get honest about why transparency feels so dangerous from the pulpit, why the isolation lands differently for women who lead, and what it actually takes to build a real sounding board. Not just a full calendar, but a support system. This is a conversation about keeping your pilot lit, refusing to spiritualize your loneliness into a badge of honor, and remembering that even Jesus built an inner circle.

Because you're not divided. You're deployed. And you were never meant to carry two worlds alone.

    In this episode, we cover:

    • Why loneliness is uniquely brutal for church leaders compared to any other field
    • The difference between being surrounded by people and actually being known
    • Why transparency feels so risky for a pastor, and what we're really afraid of
    • How the isolation of leadership hits women differently
    • The difference between a friend, a mentor, a coach, and a peer, and whether you need all four
    • Warning signs that the person you've been confiding in isn't a safe sounding board
    • How to build a support system when you have no margin and no budget
    • Whether isolation is a spiritual badge of honor or a wound we've learned to spiritualize
    • What Jesus' own inner circle teaches us about building ours
    • The one first step this week to stop leading alone

    Memorable moments:

"Being in leadership is a lonely place, and being a woman in leadership is even more so."

"A full calendar is not the same thing as a support system."

"You're not divided. You're deployed. And you were never meant to do this alone."
