It was somewhere around 6 in the morning. The hotel shift was not over. The relief manager had not arrived. And the ministry commitment that had been carefully planned and protected on the calendar was about to be overridden by a world that still had to be managed.
If you have ever stood in that moment, when two callings collided and one of them had to wait, this episode was built for you.
In Episode 5 of the 40/40 Bi-Vocational Pastors Podcast, Pastor Arthur J. James delivers solo teaching drawn from more than 30 years of bi-vocational ministry. This episode has two movements. The first is theological: your calendar is not just a scheduling tool. It is a confession. It reveals what you actually believe about God, about your calling, and about yourself, based not on what you say is important but on where your hours actually go.
The second movement is practical. Pastor James unpacks the PREACH framework, developed and published in his book Preaching Through Pain, a six-step acrostic for showing up prepared in any room, under any pressure, with whatever preparation time you actually have. It is the framework that has carried him through three decades of last-minute pulpit moments, calendar disruptions, and mornings when the plan did not survive contact with the day.
If Episode 3 named the Two-World Tax and Episode 4 addressed the loneliness of leadership, Episode 5 hands you the tool. Practical. Proven, and built for the 40/40 life.
“Your calendar is a confession. It tells the truth about you even when you would rather tell a different story.”
In This Episode
• Why how you manage your time is a direct reflection of what you actually believe about God
• The difference between a pastor who knows about God and a pastor who knows God, and how the calendar exposes which one you are
• Why personal spiritual formation is oxygen for the bi-vocational pastor and the one non-negotiable that never moves off the schedule
• The PREACH framework, letter by letter, with direct application to the 40/40 life
• What the hotel story at 6:30 in the morning taught Pastor James about the only calendar item that disruption cannot touch
• What bi-vocational pastors need to do differently by Monday morning
The PREACH Framework
P Pray — Surrender the moment before you enter it.
R Remember Your Purpose — Ministry from assignment, not performance for approval.
E Expect Problems — Disruption is a variable you already accounted for.
A Affirm Who You Are in God — Your calling is not revoked because you are tired.
C Commit as Much as You Can to Memory — Be present with people, not dependent on the page.
H Have Fun in Your Calling — Genuine joy in your assignment is visible and contagious.
