December tornadoes are rare in central Illinois, which is part of what makes the Taylorville storm of December 1, 2018 worth studying. A tornado warning went out at 5:12 PM for central Christian County; the tornado touched down eighteen minutes later, just west of town, and intensified from a weak EF-1 to a strong EF-3 in under two minutes. This episode reconstructs the storm's passage through Taylorville as a wedge nearly half a mile wide, with maximum winds later estimated at 160 miles per hour and a path width reaching eight hundred yards. More than five hundred structures were damaged or destroyed before the tornado lifted at 6:08 PM northeast of town. The documentary follows the warning chain of sirens, phones, and weather radios, asking why a storm with above-average lead time still caught people unprotected, and what the damage survey revealed about how homes fail in extreme wind.
