  • Mas Oyama: The Korean Boy Who Became Japan's Most Feared Karate Master
    2026/09/10

He spent eighteen months alone on a mountain.

When he came down, he became famous for demonstrations in which he broke stones and boards with his bare hands. Then he fought bulls. Then he built Japan’s most brutal karate — as a Korean man the country never fully claimed.

Mas Oyama — born Choi Yeong-eui in Japanese-occupied Korea — is one of the most extraordinary figures in the history of the fighting arts.

A teenager displaced to Japan. A postwar misfit searching for purpose. A man who twice retreated into mountain solitude to forge himself into something the world had not seen before.

He became the founder of Kyokushin Karate, an art that shaped a generation of fighters and helped lay the foundations for kickboxing, K-1, and modern MMA.

This documentary follows Oyama’s journey from his boyhood as Choi Yeong-eui in colonial Korea, through his wartime displacement to Japan, his mountain retreats and the extreme discipline that followed, the bullfighting demonstrations that made him a legend, the founding and philosophy of Kyokushin, and the fracturing of his legacy after his death.

This is deep, cited documentary storytelling about the history of the fighting arts.

  • Jigoro Kano: How a Bullied Boy Built the World's Most Influential Martial Art
    2026/09/09

In 19th-century Japan, a small, frail schoolteacher transformed the dying art of jujutsu into a global phenomenon.

His name was Jigoro Kano — founder of Judo, architect of the modern black belt system, and a man whose philosophy would quietly reshape the martial arts world.

This episode tells the full story of Kano’s extraordinary life. From his childhood as a bullied outsider in Meiji-era Japan, to the decisive 1886 Tokyo Metropolitan Police tournament where his Kodokan students challenged the old jujutsu schools, to the journey of his student Mitsuyo Maeda to Brazil — where the seeds of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu would eventually take root.

But Kano was more than a martial artist. He was a philosopher, educator, and the first Asian member of the International Olympic Committee.

His two guiding principles — Seiryoku Zenyo, or maximum efficiency, and Jita Kyoei, mutual welfare and benefit — were never simply about winning a fight. They were a philosophy for how to live.

Kano died at sea in 1938, never seeing Judo included in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics he had spent decades helping bring to Japan. But by then, his art had already travelled around the world.

This is the story of Jigoro Kano.
