Parenting has a way of shining a light on where we, as parents, need to become more flexible and add new strategies. Acceptance of ourselves, our children and our experiences is a more connected approach.
But acceptance does not mean doing nothing and simply letting things be. It is more of a nervous system thing. We can still take action, respond to information and address what needs our attention while feeling safe and regulated in our nervous system.
In this episode of the Suggestive Parenting Podcast, Rebecca sits down with Sheena Howard, BScN, MA, RYT, RN, Psychotherapist, to explore the powerful role acceptance plays in parenting, mental health and nervous system regulation.
Sheena Howard, BScN, MA, RYT, RN, Psychotherapist, is the founder of Acceptance Nurse Psychotherapy and Biz Nurse Savvy. With more than 20 years of experience in healthcare, Sheena is a dynamic speaker, love-led leader, and proud status quo disruptor who is passionate about creating a more human, inclusive approach to healthcare. Known for blending expertise with warmth, authenticity, and humour, Sheena believes genuine connection should always be at the heart of care and leadership.
Together, Rebecca and Sheena talk about what happens in our brains and bodies when we become frustrated or triggered by our children, and how simple practices such as heart practice, breathwork and changing our physiology can help us return to a more regulated state.
Sheena introduces the RAIN approach to emotions, Recognize, Allow, Investigate and Nurture, and explains how learning to acknowledge emotions without judgment can change the way we respond to ourselves and our children.
The conversation also explores parenting neurodivergent children, ADHD, empathy, humor and the importance of meeting children where they are rather than where we think they should be. Sheena shares from her own experience as a parent of two neurodivergent sons and offers practical advice for finding supportive professionals, being open to different forms of support and helping children understand and accept their emotions.
Rebecca and Sheena also talk about modeling being human, making mistakes, letting go of judgment and giving ourselves permission to be flexible as parents.
Because parenting was never meant to be about getting everything right. It is about connection, understanding, acceptance and learning together.
Tune in for a heartfelt conversation filled with practical tools, personal stories and reminders that acceptance does not mean giving up. It means creating enough safety within ourselves to respond rather than react, while still taking action where it matters.
