Stephen Douglas McMichael, the larger-than-life figure known as “Mongo,” who made his mark both on the football field and in the wrestling ring, died April 23, 2025, at age 67. The former Chicago Bears defensive tackle and professional wrestler had been battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) since his diagnosis in 2021. His death was confirmed by his spokeswoman, Betsy Shepherd, shortly after he was moved into hospice care.
McMichael’s career in the National Football League spanned 15 seasons, most notably with the Chicago Bears. A two-time Pro Bowler and five-time All-Pro, he played a pivotal role in the Bears’ dominant defense that led the team to a victory in Super Bowl XX. Originally drafted by the New England Patriots in 1980 out of the University of Texas, McMichael found his true home in Chicago, where he became a fan favorite and one of the franchise’s enduring personalities. He concluded his playing days with a brief stint on the Green Bay Packers' roster.
Following his football career, McMichael transitioned into professional wrestling, becoming a familiar face in World Championship Wrestling (WCW). He first appeared as a commentator before stepping into the ring himself, ultimately joining the famed Four Horsemen stable and capturing the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship. He also made cameo appearances in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), including at WrestleMania XI.
Beyond the spotlight of sports and entertainment, McMichael was a fixture in Chicago’s media scene, co-hosting on local sports radio and lending his name to a restaurant in the city’s southwest suburbs. He served as head coach of the Chicago Slaughter in the Continental Indoor Football League from 2007 to 2013, and even mounted an unsuccessful campaign for mayor of Romeoville, Illinois.
In 2024, McMichael’s legacy was cemented with his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
From gridiron glory to wrestling theatrics, Stephen McMichael brought passion, power, and personality to every endeavor. He is remembered as a fierce competitor, a beloved entertainer, and a Chicago icon.
