概要
On 17 October 1806, Jean-Jacques Dessalines was killed at Pont-Rouge near Port-au-Prince after leaving Marchand on 15 October to restore order in Haiti, where the army, the finances and internal security remained under his authority. ⚔️🗺️ The turning point came when soldiers positioned along the road near Port-au-Prince waited for him, and the official report said he reached opposing advance positions at about eight in the morning without recognizing that allegiance had changed. The story is anchored in the 1805 Constitution, the imperial report of 18 October, the letter from Étienne Gérin and other southern commanders, and the road to the Cul-de-Sac plain. It also follows the army, ministers, generals, officers and the shifting loyalty that shaped the state. The core uncertainty is how the ambush was organized and who, beyond the anti-Dessalines forces, directed its details, since later accounts differ on the sequence of shots and blows. Jewels of History examines what happened at Pont-Rouge, why allegiance changed, and how Haiti’s first post-independence political order came apart.
