Mean what you say.
Fascinating conversation with my friend Pranath Fernando about integrity and congruency of communication. Cleverly following on from last episode about Boundaries are your preferences, here we detail how many people we listen to are afraid to share what preferences are for fear of not fitting in. The problem with that is that if you don’t state your preferences or your views then you run the risk of being manipulative with your communication. Here we give many examples of ‘slippery’ or ‘incongruent’ communication and how to clear it up.
He says: “What worries me more is people censoring themselves, muting themselves or not communicating what’s important to them
I worry about a world where people are not expressing what they really mean, think and feel.”
The problem with that is that you are not expressing the truth of your very being, how can others in your life get to know you?
“People who are afraid to say what they really think feel that it is a conflict; If I say this — it will offend other people, they are perhaps emphasising what is for the greater good rather that what is for my good. This framing is a zero sum gain meaning either I am selfish and do things for my own needs OR I sacrifice myself for the greater good.
To create a better world, say what you mean, be honest and speak your truth — no matter what. Does this seem very difficult or challenging? There’s a good reason for why that is. Download my communication free training in link below to cut yourself out of this trap.
