Welcome to Episode 31, Season 2, today we are going to talk about, "The Myth of Stolen Base”…Myth? Really?

Has the Stolen Base become more popular since the new rule changes?

Yes, Major League Baseball (MLB) has seen a significant increase in stolen bases since the implementation of the pitch clock and other related rule changes in the 2023 season. This surge is a direct result of several interconnected rule modifications designed to speed up the game and inject more action.

The primary rule changes contributing to the increase in stolen bases include the pitch clock, larger bases, and limitations on pitcher disengagements (pickoff attempts). The pitch clock, set at 15 seconds with no runners on base and 20 seconds with runners on base (reduced to 18 seconds in 2024), forces pitchers to deliver the ball more quickly, potentially making it harder for them to hold runners close to the base. Batters must also be ready in the box by the 8-second mark.

The size of the bases was increased from 15 square inches to 18 square inches. This seemingly small change reduces the distance between bases by 4.5 inches, making it slightly easier for runners to reach the bag safely and providing a larger target for sliding.
