Today, on Day 306 of Saints in a Year, we honor Saint Ingrid of Skänninge, the first Dominican nun in Sweden and foundress of the first Dominican cloister for women there.

Under the spiritual direction of the Dominican priest Peter of Dacia, Ingrid embraced Dominican spirituality and eventually founded St. Martin's in Skänninge in 1281. She died only about a year later, but devotion surrounding her holiness continued.

Her unusual recognition history is fascinating. A canonization process began in 1405, Swedish bishops promoted her cause at the Council of Constance, an investigation followed in 1416–1417, and the cause was revived in 1497. In 1507, her relics were solemnly translated and a Mass and Divine Office were composed in her honor. However, a final formal papal canonization apparently never occurred.

During the Protestant Reformation in Sweden, her convent and relics were destroyed.

Yet more than seven centuries later, Catholics still remember Saint Ingrid and the life she gave to God.

Thought to Remember

We are called to be faithful with our chapter and trust God with the rest of the story.

Ingrid never saw how everything would turn out. Neither will we. There will be prayers whose answers we never see, seeds whose harvest belongs to another generation, and work that continues after we're gone. Our job is not to control the ending. Our job is to remain faithful.

Prayer

Saint Ingrid of Skänninge, pray for us when life changes in ways we never expected. Give us courage to follow Christ wherever He leads, teach us to plant faithfully even when someone else will see the harvest, and help us trust God with the rest of our story.

Today, on Day 305 of Saints in a Year, we honor Saint Giles, the mysterious hermit and abbot whose devotion became enormously popular throughout medieval Christianity.

Historically, many details of Giles' life remain uncertain. But according to a beloved medieval tradition, he withdrew into the forests of southern France, where a deer regularly provided him with milk. When royal hunters pursued the animal, it fled toward Giles for protection. An arrow intended for the deer struck the hermit instead.

Giles later became associated with a monastery and eventually became one of the famous Fourteen Holy Helpers, invoked especially by the sick, poor, frightened, and those living with disabilities.

His story reminds us that holiness does not require recognition. Some of the most important things we will ever do for God may happen where nobody else can see them.

Thought to Remember

Holiness does not require being noticed. It requires being faithful.

Saint Giles spent much of his life seeking God in hiddenness. We may never know exactly how every detail of his medieval story unfolded, but his legacy reminds us that the quiet life offered completely to God is never insignificant.

Prayer

Saint Giles, teach us to seek God even when nobody is watching. Pray for those living with disabilities, illness, loneliness, or fear. Help us accept the wounds and limitations we cannot change without allowing them to define our worth.

Today, on Day 304 of Saints in a Year, we honor Saint Joseph of Arimathea and Saint Nicodemus, two secret disciples whose courage emerged at one of the darkest moments in the Gospel.

Nicodemus first approached Jesus at night and later cautiously defended Him before other religious leaders. Joseph of Arimathea was a respected council member and secret disciple who had been afraid to reveal his faith.

Then Jesus was crucified.

When following Him seemed to offer absolutely nothing in return, Joseph went directly to Pontius Pilate and asked for Christ's body. Nicodemus arrived with an extraordinary quantity of myrrh and aloes.

Together, they prepared Jesus for burial and placed Him in Joseph's new tomb.

They thought they were performing one final act of love.

They had no idea that the tomb they were closing...

would soon be empty.

Thought to Remember

"Joseph of Arimathea... took courage and went to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus."

Mark 15:43

Joseph had been afraid before. Scripture doesn't hide that. But eventually, he took courage. Courage doesn't mean fear disappears. It means faith becomes greater than fear.

Prayer

Saint Joseph of Arimathea and Saint Nicodemus, pray for us when fear makes us hide our faith. Give us courage to stand with Jesus when following Him becomes difficult, unpopular, or costly. And when life feels like Good Friday, help us remember that Easter morning is coming.
