The SMARTER Team Training Podcast is where athletes, coaches, and parents come together to learn, grow, and build a better approach to training, competition, and long-term athlete development.

Hosted by Robert Taylor, Jr. (aka Coach Taylor) of SMARTER Team Training, the podcast turns real-world coaching experience, practical training strategies, and current sports science into information you can understand and immediately put into action.

Great sports performance requires more than talent. It takes preparation, consistency, confidence, communication, and people working together toward a common goal. That’s why SMARTER Team Training looks beyond the scoreboard to develop the complete athlete.

Episodes explore strength and conditioning, coaching, youth sports, leadership, team culture, nutrition, recovery, injury prevention, mindset, communication, athleticism, skill development, Game IQ, and the everyday habits that help athletes maximize their potential.

For athletes, we’ll break down what you can control, how to take ownership of your development, how to train with purpose, and how to become the teammate and competitor others can count on.

For coaches, we’ll explore better ways to teach, communicate, develop athletes, build meaningful relationships, create effective training environments, establish standards, and develop a championship-level team culture that reaches far beyond wins and losses.

For parents, we’ll provide practical education to better understand training, competition, nutrition, recovery, injury prevention, expectations, communication, and the important role families play throughout the youth sports experience.

We’ll also take sports-performance research out of the laboratory and bring it into the real world. Episodes will examine current findings and explain what the research may—and may not—mean for athletes, coaches, parents, and performance professionals.

And because SMARTER Team Training has deep roots in a wide range of sports from lacrosse, soccer, basketball, field hockey, volleyball, football, swimming, and more, you’ll find dedicated education covering skill development, athleticism, tactical decision-making, Game IQ, leadership, communication, preparation, and what it takes to become a more complete player.

Whether you’re an athlete chasing your next level, a coach committed to developing people as well as players, or a parent trying to provide better support from the sidelines, there’s a place for you here.

This isn’t about finding shortcuts. It’s about asking better questions, making better decisions, creating better habits, and understanding that development is a process.

Train with purpose. Compete with confidence. Lead by example. Support the team.

  • Building A Culture That Wins Together
    2026/09/28

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

A strong team culture is not created by slogans, uniforms, or talent alone. It is built through the standards people uphold, the habits they repeat, and the way they treat one another every day.

In this episode of the SMARTER Team Training Podcast, Coach Taylor explains what it means to put “WE before me.” Athletes will explore how identity, standards, accountability, leadership, and daily habits shape the way a team prepares, competes, responds to adversity, and wins together.

Players will be challenged to remain disciplined, accept accountability, lead through their actions, support their teammates, and consistently do their part. Coaches will learn how to model expectations, reinforce the right behaviors, correct privately, praise publicly, and create an environment where team standards matter. Parents will discover how trusting the process, supporting team expectations, and allowing coaches to coach can strengthen unity and long-term development.

The episode also provides reflection questions, team discussions, athlete challenges, and practical practice and game-day checklists designed to turn culture from an idea into observable behavior.

Every choice either strengthens or weakens the team. Be disciplined. Be accountable. Be a leader. Do your part. Put WE before me.

  • Known Before Coached
    2026/09/26

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

Every athlete deserves more than a name on the roster and a stream of corrections. In this coach’s-clinic episode, Coach Taylor turns relationship-building into a practical system that can work across a full team. The episode introduces the four-part STT check-in: person, role, development, and support. Coaches learn how to map contact, use short practice windows, ask better questions, summarize what they hear, clarify roles, include injured athletes and non-starters, and close promised follow-ups. Players receive a simple way to prepare for development conversations. Parents learn how to support athlete advocacy without replacing the athlete’s voice. The episode also protects important boundaries: coaches are not therapists, check-ins do not guarantee playing time or performance, and serious concerns require appropriate safeguarding and qualified support. The central standard is simple: know the person enough to coach the player, and coach the player without losing the person.

  • Turning Preparation Into Complete Game Performance
    2026/09/24

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

Complete performance is not built from one skill. It happens when athleticism, stick skills, game IQ, tactics, communication, teamwork, and mindset come together at the right moment.

In this episode of the SMARTER Team Training Podcast, Coach Taylor explains how athletes can connect everything they have learned and trained to perform confidently when the game speeds up. Using a fast-break opportunity as a practical example, the episode follows the complete sequence—from recognizing the play and sprinting with purpose to communicating, filling lanes, handling the ball cleanly, making the right decision, executing, supporting teammates, and resetting for what comes next.

Athletes will learn to focus on controllable actions, win the small moments, adapt under pressure, and reflect honestly on their effort, decisions, communication, and team support. Coaches will learn how to trust preparation, simplify their messages, adjust calmly, reinforce successful execution, and maintain accountability. Parents will discover how positive encouragement, respect for the coaching process, and an emphasis on effort and growth can support confident performance.

Know your role. Own your role. Elevate your team. One team, one goal—do your job and win together.
