John 3:16 is arguably the best-known verse in the Bible. Perhaps less is known about the conversation immediately preceding it. Jesus was explaining to Nicodemus how a bronze serpent lifted on a pole in a desert hundreds of years earlier would be similar to Jesus' own crucifixion.
