Men more likely to hit the wall in a marathon, new study finds - A new study, published in Scientific Reports, looked at 873,334 Berlin Marathon finishes from 1999 to 2025 to see how often that late-race slowdown happens, and who is most likely to experience it. The researchers defined hitting the wall as slowing by at least 20 per cent after the halfway mark, compared to the first half of the race. In the study, 17.6 per cent of male runners hit the wall, compared with only 9.7 per cent of female runners. And the difference only increased the faster the runners went. For those finishing under three hours, men were about six times more likely than women to fall apart in the second half.https://runningmagazine.ca/sections/training/men-are-far-more-likely-to-hit-the-wall-in-a-marathon-new-study-finds/ Hosted on Acast. • Diamond league, scams and running 1000 miles
    2026/05/14

    1. Diamond league starts this coming weekend [15 meets over the next 4 months]. Here are 7 questions the letsrun.com hosts discussed. What are your answers?

    a. Will Cole Hocker or Grant Fisher earn their first career Diamond League win in 2026? [JG and Rohjo - pick hocker]

    b. Which Teen Phenom will have the most success in 2026: Cooper Lutkenhaus. Cam Myers or Gout Gout? [JG - Myers, Rojo - Lutkenhaus]

    c. How will Femke Bol handle her transition to the 800M. [JG - She will run well but not challenge Hodgkinson. Rojo - Summary - still a big gap between her one indoor performance and a podium on a global outdoor stage.]

    d. Who will end the year as the top men's 1500M runner? [Hocker, Kerr, Nader, Laros, Koech, Ingebrigtsen - JG - Laros he is only 21, Rojo - Laros].

    e. Will any WR go down in 2026? If so, which events do you think? [JG - Yes - at least 3 - men's mile, 800. women's 800/1500. Rojo - 800 or mile.]

    f. Who do you think will be a breakout star in 2026? [JG - Jordan Anthony. Rojo - Anthony, Lukenhaus or Myers.]

    2. 60 Minutes interviewed Gout Gout.

    a. He is a smart, mature athlete.

    b. He has a elderly women coach.

    c. No real shockers - taking it slow (sort of).

    3. Five lessons all runners can learn from the sub two hour marathon.

    a. High Carb Fuelling is really important. Solid breakfast (toast, honey, tea, 80G carb drink and a gel before the start) plus 230 grams of carbs during the race. Typical energy gel has 20-30 grams.

    b. Consistent training matters. Sawe uses a 10 day training block (not the typical 7 days). He does run 125 to 150 miles in a peak week. One long run, One interval, hills and easy runs).

    c. Pace to Race success. Plan to run your first half at a slightly slower pace than your race goal with the intention of negative splitting. Make sure you hydrate and fuel to support your ability to negative split.

    d. Racing helped achieve faster times. Run with people even in training to achieve success. Use that to motivate you.

    e. Believe in yourself, but use evidence from training. Just because you want to run a sub 3 marathon you need your training to support that goal.

    4. Holy sh*t - A guy ran 1000 miles on a track.

    a. That's right - 4000 laps on a track.

    b. He ran from 5AM to 8PM daily.

    c. It took 18 days, 13 hours and 11 minutes.

    d. This is 3 on the list of 1000 mile people. Kouros set the record in 1988 with 1000 miles in 10 days, 10 hours and 30 minutes. In 2024 Brockman completed 1000 miles in 12 days, 13 hours and 16 minutes. So 18 days does not seem quite as impressive now.

    5. Once a cheater always a cheater. British Sprinter CJ Ujah arrested for alleged cryptocurrency fraud. He was on the 4X100 relay for Britain at Tokyo that won the silver medal but later stripped due to CJ's doping.
