  • Why You Need to Rewatch Stand By Me
    2026/08/20

Released in 1986 and set during Labor Day weekend in 1959, Stand by Me follows four 12-year-old friends living in the fictional town of Castle Rock, Oregon.

After Vern Tessio overhears that the body of a missing boy has been discovered near the railroad tracks, he tells his friends Gordie Lachance, Chris Chambers, and Teddy Duchamp. Hoping to become local heroes, the boys invent an excuse for their parents and begin a two-day journey to find the body.

What begins as an adventure quickly becomes something much more personal. Each boy carries his own fears and problems: Gordie feels invisible to his grieving parents, Chris worries that his family’s reputation has already determined his future, Teddy idolizes an abusive father, and Vern desperately wants to belong.

The movie is based on Stephen King’s novella The Body, originally published in his 1982 collection Different Seasons. Unlike the supernatural horror normally associated with King, this is a deeply human story about grief, friendship, fear, and the painful realization that childhood cannot last forever.

  • Oh Behave! The Genius Behind Austin Powers
    2026/08/06

Released on May 2, 1997, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery is a spy comedy written by Mike Myers and directed by Jay Roach.

The movie stars Myers in two roles: Austin Powers, an outrageously confident British secret agent from the swinging sixties, and Dr. Evil, the bald, emotionally unavailable criminal mastermind determined to take over the world.

The story begins in 1967, when Dr. Evil escapes Austin by launching himself into space and entering cryogenic suspension. With no reason to remain active, Austin volunteers to be frozen until his enemy eventually returns.

Thirty years later, Dr. Evil comes back to Earth and threatens the world with a stolen nuclear weapon. Unfortunately, he has been gone so long that he doesn’t understand inflation—or how much money a proper international villain should demand.

Austin is thawed out to stop him, but he quickly discovers that the free-loving culture of the sixties has been replaced by the very different world of the 1990s.

Helping him adjust is Vanessa Kensington, played by Elizabeth Hurley. Vanessa is the daughter of Austin’s former partner, Mrs. Kensington, and she isn’t immediately impressed by Austin’s behavior, appearance or endless supply of ridiculous pickup lines.

While Austin tries to adapt, Dr. Evil faces a different kind of culture shock. His criminal organization has become a successful legitimate business, his henchmen occasionally question his logic and he learns that he has a teenage son named Scott.

The result is part James Bond parody, part fish-out-of-water comedy and part dysfunctional family therapy session inside a secret underground lair.

  • Spies Like Us: Why This 1985 Spy Comedy Is Still So Funny
    2026/07/23

Released on December 6, 1985, Spies Like Us is a Cold War buddy comedy directed by John Landis, the filmmaker behind Animal House, The Blues Brothers, An American Werewolf in London and Trading Places. Chevy Chase plays Emmett Fitz-Hume, a charming but lazy State Department employee who relies more on confidence and family connections than actual ability. Dan Aykroyd plays Austin Millbarge, an intelligent but overlooked Pentagon technician who dreams of becoming a field agent. After both men cheat during a government examination, they are unexpectedly promoted, rushed through a completely ridiculous training program and sent on a secret overseas mission. Fitz-Hume and Millbarge believe they’ve finally become real spies. What they don’t know is that they are expendable decoys, selected to draw enemy attention away from a more capable team. The assignment sends them through Pakistan and into Soviet territory, where a mission they barely understand places a nuclear missile—and possibly the entire world—in their hands. It’s part spy spoof, part buddy comedy and part satire of Cold War paranoia.

  • Gotcha! 1985 | Mistaken Identity Turns Game Into Nightmare
    2026/07/17

Jonathan Moore is an 18-year-old veterinary student attending UCLA. Socially, he’s shy, inexperienced, and not particularly successful with women. There is one area, however, in which Jonathan is almost unstoppable. He is the reigning champion of a campus-wide game called “Gotcha,” in which students hunt assigned targets and eliminate them using paintball guns. Jonathan treats the campus like his own private battlefield, creating elaborate hiding places and stalking his opponents with impressive skill. Then Jonathan and his roommate, Manolo, travel to Paris for spring break. While Manolo is busy chasing women, Jonathan meets Sasha, an older, confident, and sophisticated woman who appears to be everything Jonathan is not. She quickly seduces him, and Jonathan abandons his original travel plans to follow her into West Berlin. What begins as Jonathan’s European fantasy soon becomes a dangerous Cold War nightmare. Sasha is hiding secrets, Soviet agents are following them, and Jonathan unknowingly becomes involved in an international intelligence operation. Back in California, Jonathan’s family and the authorities think his story sounds ridiculous. To survive, he must apply the skills he learned playing Gotcha on campus to a game in which being eliminated could mean actually dying.

  • INDEPENDENCE DAY (1996): WELCOME TO EARTH!
    2026/07/09

Released in the summer of 1996, Independence Day is a science-fiction disaster movie directed by Roland Emmerich and written by Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin.

The story begins when enormous alien spacecraft arrive above major cities around the world.

At first, nobody knows what they want.

    Are they explorers?

    Are they trying to communicate?

    Do they come in peace?

    The answer arrives pretty quickly.

    No.

No, they absolutely do not come in peace.

The aliens unleash a devastating attack that destroys major cities and cripples governments around the world. Humanity suddenly finds itself facing an enemy with superior technology, massive ships, powerful shields, and absolutely no interest in negotiation.

The story follows several characters whose lives eventually collide.

Captain Steven Hiller is a Marine fighter pilot who wants to become an astronaut.

David Levinson is a brilliant satellite technician who discovers that the aliens are using Earth’s satellites to coordinate their attack.

President Thomas Whitmore is a former combat pilot who suddenly has to lead what remains of the country.

Russell Casse is a troubled former fighter pilot who has spent years claiming that aliens abducted him.

And as July 4th approaches, these very different people become part of humanity’s final attempt to fight back.

What makes the movie work is that it isn’t just about one hero.

    It’s an ensemble disaster movie.

We jump from Washington to New York to Los Angeles to Area 51, following families, soldiers, scientists, politicians, and ordinary people as the world falls apart.

And eventually, all of those stories come together for one giant final battle.
