  • TechCamp Kochi: A wave of Change - How it unfolded

    On World Oceans Day (8 June 2022), we are very glad to bring you some exciting conversations with a team of experts who were participating at the TechCamp Kochi. TechCamp Kochi was a three-day program organised by the US Consulate General, Chennai, TechCamp in the US, and the Centre for Public Policy and Research. The camp was held from 19th to 21st May 2022.

    The theme for this TechCamp was Tech4Oceans: Innovative Solutions for a Sustainable Future. On the sidelines of this, Research Matters caught up with the experts who were mentoring and part of this TechCamp.

    We will bring you these conversations in two sessions. In the first session, our guests share what TechCamp is and provide an overview of it. In the second session, the guests engaged in a discussion sharing how the TechCamp was going about and the dimensions it addressed.

    In the second session, we have the following guests in this show:

    * Scott Hartmann is the Cultural Affairs Officer, U.S. Consulate in Chennai.

    * Jenny Beth is a Program Manager with TechCamp.

    * Lydiah Wanjiru is a GIS Specialist based in Kenya.

    * Kate Furby is a Media producer and Science Journalist at Tiny Beaker Media.

    * Margot Stiles is a marine biologist with 20 years of global experience in community resilience, climate change and natural resource conservation.

    * Samdy Lonh is a senior consultant in DeCons Research & Development Co., Ltd. in the field of ICT4D from Cambodia.

  • Infosys Prize 2020 – Humanities – Special episode with Prof Deshpande and Prof Bilgrami

    The Infosys Prize endeavours to elevate the prestige of science and research in India and inspire young Indians to choose a vocation in research.

    The award is given annually to honour outstanding achievements of contemporary researchers and scientists across six categories: Engineering and Computer Sciences, Humanities, Life Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences, each carrying a prize of a gold medal, a citation and a purse of USD 100,000 (or its equivalent in Rupees). The prize purse is tax-free in the hands of winners in India.

    This year the prizes were announced in December 2020.

    In this special episode, দেবদত্ত পাল। Debdutta Paul talks to Prof Prachi Deshpande –– Infosys Prize 2020 recipient for Humanities, and Prof Akeel Bilgrami –– Jury and Chair, Humanities, Infosys Science Foundation.

    They speak about the context of Professor Prachi Deshpande’s work in Humanities. They discuss what motivates her research in the field, as well as what interests Professor Akeel Bilgrami about her work. Then, they discuss the importance of research in Humanities, in the light of the crises that we are facing today, and the role of Humanities in our everyday lives.

  • Nobel Prize 2020 — Episode 3: Laureates in Physics and their work

    In 1895, the Swedish chemist, Alfred Nobel, established the Nobel Prizes. The award is presented annually to exemplars in the fields of Medicine & Physiology, Chemistry, Physics, Economic Sciences, Peace and Literature. Each recipient receives a gold medal, a diploma and a sum of money decided by the Nobel Foundation. Some of the past recipients from India include Rabindranath Tagore, CV Raman, and Amartya Sen.

    This year, the Prizes were announced in October. Eleven pioneers and one organisation from across the world were recognised for their contributions.
