Washoe County School Board votes to investigate the real impact of screen time on students, sparked by parent outcry over the widely used i-Ready program—used for daily lessons and testing from kindergarten through eighth grade. With findings due by November and a full report by February, the board’s decision could determine whether to renew a multimillion-dollar contract. While some parents, like Brandi Vesco, question the study’s lack of peer review and timing, school officials defend i-Ready as a personalized learning tool that helps struggling students—and clarify students are tested three times yearly, not six. The outcome could reshape how schools use digital tools in classrooms.

A mysterious $25,000 donation is transforming the Lyon County Animal Shelter—cutting adoption fees to just $50 and funding spay/neuter costs to help pets find forever homes. With 69 dogs currently housed and 60 more on the waiting list, the shelter’s overcrowding crisis was dire—until community support surged, leading to 35 adoptions in one week alone. While this boost is life-changing, the need remains urgent as strays continue to arrive and kennels stay full.

A Nevada voter has filed a whistleblower complaint against congressional candidate David Flippo for allegedly failing to file required financial disclosures—making him the only qualified candidate in his district without them. Suspecting foul play, she argues this lack of transparency undermines public trust and accountability, questioning whether Flippo can be trusted to serve voters if he won’t disclose his finances. The DOJ’s Public Integrity Section is now reviewing the case, while Flippo’s team claims he filed an extension and disputes the DOJ’s jurisdiction. The situation is escalating—and eyes are watching closely for next moves.

Renown Health just made history by officially embedding doulas into their women’s services — a move born from a wildly successful pilot program that proved doulas aren’t just helpers, they’re essential care partners. Working hand-in-hand with Doula Co-Op of Nevada and funded by a July grant, the pilot tested how doulas could seamlessly support labor, delivery, and postpartum care — focusing on skin-to-skin contact, breastfeeding, and emotional comfort. Early friction between nurses and doulas faded as trust grew, revealing how doulas fill critical gaps: staying with patients during emergencies while reinforcing education and calm. The result? “Comfort carts” stocked with soothing tools, co-created by staff and doulas, to transform hospital rooms into calmer spaces. Now, doulas are embedded in half of night shifts at Renown Regional — no longer visitors, but vital members of the care team, proving that compassionate, continuous support is now part of the standard of care.

Three suspects—Treyvon Currie, Jessica Zamora, and Demandre Frazier—are facing federal charges for allegedly breaking into a top-secret Nevada National Security Site armed with guns, then lying to the ATF about their firearm purchases. The indictment details how they allegedly defrauded authorities twice to obtain handguns, and in August, Currie and Zamora allegedly tried to enter restricted federal property with weapons—triggering serious felony counts including unauthorized entry, firearm possession on federal grounds, and fraud. This case underscores the razor-thin line between ambition and law enforcement when dealing with high-security government sites.

Nevada’s gubernatorial race is heating up as Attorney General Aaron Ford unveils bold energy policy moves—expanding the PUCN to protect consumers and making data centers pay for their power surges. He’s challenging the status quo, accusing current leadership of siding with big energy players at the expense of everyday Nevadans struggling with rising bills. Ford’s plan shifts costs from households to heavy industrial users, positioning affordability as his top priority—and setting the stage for a fierce showdown over who really pays for Nevada’s energy future.
