Hello everybody. If you want ALL the Stories/Content in FULL, please go to www.steveuk.blog Thank you.I got a request to do a slightly longer story from a good user on www.free4talk.com ... so here we go!Short Story 916a - The Empty Platform (Intermediate)Daniel enjoyed walking home after his evening shift. The streets were calm, and the cool air helped him relax after a long day. His usual route took him past a small bus depot on the edge of town. The depot was old, but it was still used during the day.One Thursday evening, Daniel noticed something strange.A single bus was waiting at the far end of the depot. Its engine was running, but there were no lights inside. The front sign was completely blank. No driver could be seen through the windscreen.Daniel stopped for a moment. He looked around, expecting somebody to explain what was happening, but the area was empty. Then the bus door slowly opened.A cold feeling ran through his body.He told himself not to be foolish. Perhaps the driver was filling in some paperwork.Daniel walked on.The next evening, the same bus was there.Again, the engine was running.Again, the destination sign was blank.Again, nobody was inside. The door opened just as he walked past. This time, he hurried away without looking back. When he reached home, he could not stop thinking about it.On Saturday, he mentioned the strange bus to an older neighbour called Mr Harris. The old man became unusually serious."You saw it?" he asked quietly.Daniel nodded.Mr Harris looked out of the window before speaking again."Many years ago, there was a terrible accident involving a bus from that depot. Nobody could explain exactly what happened. Since then, people have sometimes seen a bus waiting there after dark."Daniel laughed nervously."That sounds like an old ghost story.""I wish it was," Mr Harris replied.Daniel smiled politely, but the conversation stayed in his mind. Two evenings later, Daniel finished work later than usual.Heavy clouds covered the sky.As he reached the depot, the strange bus was waiting once more. The engine was already running. The door opened. Then he heard a voice."Please come aboard."The voice was calm, but it did not sound human. It seemed to come from every direction at once.Daniel stepped backwards."No," he whispered. The bus gave a long, low hiss. The door remained open. For several seconds, nothing happened. Then the door closed by itself. The engine became louder.Slowly, the bus pulled away.Daniel watched in silence. The vehicle drove towards the exit of the depot.Just before reaching the road, it disappeared. There was no bright flash. There was no cloud of smoke. One moment it was there. The next moment it was gone.Daniel could not move. His hands were shaking. The following morning, he searched online for information about the old accident. He found a newspaper report from over forty years earlier.A late evening bus had left the depot with a full load of passengers. The driver had reported hearing someone calling for help beside the road.He stopped the bus....- - - -If you learned a new word today, please make sure to subscribe, so you can practice again next time.- - - -Story written by ChatGPT.Image created by ChatGPT.To Read/Listen/See ALL the Stories/Content in FULL please go to www.steveuk.blog Thank you.CC Music: Drifting at 432 Hz - Unicorn Heads.#short stories #English short stories with subtitles #short bedtime stories read aloud #English short story #short bedtime stories for toddlers #British English story #short story #short English story #English story British accent #short stories #English stories #English stories for kids #British #British studying #stories #British lifestyle #moral stories #moral stories in English #British English #British phrases #stories for teenagers #British English lesson #British English at home

Short Story 916 - The Strange Door (Upper Beginner)

Mia works at night. She cleans a large building in the city. The building is old. It has many floors and many rooms. Mia likes her job because it is quiet.

One night, Mia sees something new. On the top floor, there is a door. She never sees that door before. It is always closed. But tonight, it is open a little. A small light comes from the room.

Mia stops. She thinks, "Who is there?" No one works at night. The manager says, "Do not go to the top floor." But Mia is curious. She walks to the door.

She pushes the door. It opens with a loud sound. Inside, the room is small. There is a table, a chair, and a box. The box is dark. It has a lock. Mia hears a sound. It is like a phone. It comes from the box.

Mia looks at the box. She wants to open it. She tries the lock, but it does not move. Then she hears steps. Someone comes up the stairs. Mia is afraid. She runs to a corner and hides behind the table.

A man comes into the room. He is tall. He wears a long coat. He does not see Mia. He goes to the box. He uses a small tool. The lock opens. Inside the box is a bag. The man takes the bag and looks happy.

Mia knows this is wrong. The man is a thief. She must do something. She looks around. On the floor, there is a book. Mia takes the book and throws it. The book hits the wall.

The man turns. "Who is there?" he says. Mia stands up. "Stop!" she says. Her voice is loud. The man is surprised. He drops the bag and runs out of the room.

Mia calls the police. She tells them about the man and the bag. The police come fast. They look in the bag. It has money and papers from the building. The police say, "Thank you, Mia. You are very brave."

The next day, the manager comes to Mia. He says, "We close that door now. You can work on the top floor. You are a good worker." Mia smiles. She is not afraid now. The door is closed, and the building is safe.

  • Short Story 915 - The New Friend (Beg)
    2026/07/19

Hello everybody. If you want ALL the Stories/Content in FULL, please go to www.steveuk.blog Thank you.

Short Story 915 - The New Friend (Beginner)

Mia lived in a small town. She worked in a little book shop. Every morning, she walked to work. Every evening, she walked home. Her life was quiet, but she was happy.

One night, Mia looked up at the sky. The stars were bright. Then she saw a strange light. It moved slowly across the sky. It was not a plane. It was not a helicopter. It was very quiet.

The light came lower and lower. At last, it landed in a field near the town.

Mia was afraid, but she was also curious. She walked to the field.

There was a small silver spaceship. A door opened. A little person came out.

The visitor was not scary. It had big blue eyes and smooth green skin. It smiled at Mia.

    "Hello," the visitor said.

    Mia was very surprised.

"You can speak English?" she asked.

"Yes," the visitor said. "We learned your language before we came."

"My name is Mia," she said.

"My name is Lumo," the visitor replied.

    Lumo looked around the field.

"Your world is beautiful," Lumo said.

    Mia smiled.

    "Thank you," she answered.

Lumo showed Mia a small round machine. It made a soft light.

"What does it do?" Mia asked.

"It cleans dirty water," Lumo said. "It can help many people."

    Mia thought that was wonderful.

They talked for a long time. Lumo asked about people, animals, trees, and the sea. Mia asked about space, stars, and life on other planets.

Lumo said, "My home is very far away. We travelled for many years to come here."

    "Were you lonely?" Mia asked.

"A little," Lumo said. "But now I have a friend."

    Mia smiled again.

The sky became bright. Morning was coming.

    Lumo looked at the spaceship.

"It is time for me to go," Lumo said.

"Will I see you again?" Mia asked.

"Yes," Lumo answered. "One day, when your world is ready."

Lumo gave Mia the small machine.

"It is a gift," Lumo said. "Please use it to help people."

Then Lumo walked into the spaceship.

    The door closed.

The spaceship rose slowly into the sky. It became a small light. Then it disappeared.

Mia stood in the field and watched the empty sky.

She took the machine to scientists in her town. They studied it carefully. Soon they learned how to make many more machines. Clean water reached villages, towns, and cities around the world.

Many years later, children learned the story of Mia and Lumo at school. Some people believed it. Some people did not.

One clear night, Mia looked at the stars again.

Far away, one bright light flashed three times.

    Mia smiled.

She knew her friend had kept the promise, and she knew that one day people from Earth and people from Lumo's world would meet again in peace.

  • English Verb Tenses (Examples) (Int)
    2026/07/17

Hello everybody. If you want ALL the Stories/Content in FULL, please go to www.steveuk.blog Thank you.

    English Verb Tenses (Intermediate)

English verb tenses show when an action happens and fall into three main categories (Past, Present, and Future).

    Each category uses four aspects:

Simple, Continuous (Progressive), Perfect, and Perfect Continuous — creating 12 total tenses.

Here are examples of all 12 English verb tenses using the verb "to walk":

    Present Tenses

Present Simple: I walk to work every day.

    (Habits, facts)

Present Continuous: I am walking to work right now.

    (Actions happening now)

Present Perfect: I have walked to work before.

    (Unspecified time / past experience)

Present Perfect Continuous: I have been walking to work for an hour.

(Ongoing action starting in the past)

    Past Tenses

Past Simple: I walked to work yesterday.

    (Completed past action)

Past Continuous: I was walking to work when it started to rain.

(Action in progress interrupted by another event)

Past Perfect: I had walked to work before taking the bus.

(Past action completed before another past action)

Past Perfect Continuous: I had been walking to work for a week before I bought a car.

(Duration of a past action before another past event)

    Future Tenses

Future Simple: I will walk to work tomorrow.

    (Predictions, promises, or decisions)

Future Continuous: I will be walking to work at 9:00 AM tomorrow.

(Action in progress at a specific future time)

Future Perfect: I will have walked to work by the time you call.

(Action completed before a future point in time)

Future Perfect Continuous: I will have been walking to work for a month straight by Friday.

(Ongoing action continuing up to a future point)

To choose the right verb tense, look at the timeline of the action and its duration.

Here is a breakdown of exactly when to use each of the 12 verb tenses.

    Present Tenses

Present Simple: Use for permanent facts, daily habits, or scheduled events.

Example: The sun rises in the east. I drink coffee every morning.

Present Continuous: Use for temporary actions happening right now or around the present time.

Example: I am typing a message at this moment.

Present Perfect: Use for past experiences with no specific time, or past actions with present results.

Example: I have visited Paris twice.

(Time doesn't matter; the experience does).

Present Perfect Continuous: Use for actions that started in the past and are still continuing right now.

Example: It has been raining for three hours.

    (It is still raining).

    Past Tenses

Past Simple: Use for actions that started and finished at a specific time in the past.

Example: We watched a movie last night.

Past Continuous: Use to describe an action that was already in progress when another shorter event happened.

Example: I was sleeping when the phone rang.

Past Perfect: Use for the "older" of two past actions to show which happened first.

Example: The train had already left when I arrived at the station.

Past Perfect Continuous: Use to show how long an action was happening before another past event interrupted it.

Example: He had been studying for hours before he finally took a break.

  • Short Story 914 - Keeping Cool (Int)
    2026/07/17

Hello everybody. If you want ALL the Stories/Content in FULL, please go to www.steveuk.blog Thank you.

Short Story 914 - Keeping Cool (Intermediate)

When summer sun begins to beat upon the streets in heavy waves, we seek the shade beneath the trees and sit beside the garden gates.

Some fill their cups with ice and juice, some peel an orange, slow and sweet. Some dip their feet in pools of blue and let the water cool their skin.

We close the blinds to block the light, we turn the fans on low and high. We eat cold meals on simple plates and wait for evening, wait for night.

Some drift to shops with open doors where air flows cool along the aisles. They wander slow through rows of books and stay until the heat subsides.

Some ride the bus and take the train, not for the place but for the breeze. They travel far to reach the sea and walk along the wet sand bare.

At home we place wet cloths of white upon our necks and tired heads. We drink warm tea, as some folks say that heat can chase the heat away.

The children play in spray and hose, they laugh and shout and run and splash. The dogs lie flat on kitchen floors and pant upon the cool stone tiles.

We open windows, hoping hard for any wind to come our way. We read our books in quiet rooms and move less, talk less, think less too.

The old men sit in public squares beneath the planes where shadows fall. They talk of years when it was worse and years when rain would save us all.

The mothers fan the little ones with folded paper, hand to hand. They hum a tune and wipe a brow and watch the sky for signs of grey.

Some cook at dawn before the heat, then store the food and close the door. Some sleep through noon beneath thin sheets and wake when light begins to fade.

We frozen yield to sweet delights: a cone of cream, a stick of ice. We bite and lick and smile awhile and feel the cold rush down our throats.

Some hike to hills where air is thin and streams run cold between the rocks. They sit on boulders, dip their hands, and wish they never had to leave.

The city slows, the pavements glow, the buildings shine like heated glass. We cross the road with careful steps and look for shade on every side.

We turn the hose upon the grass and stand beneath it, clothes and all. We place our phones in bowls of rice -- no -- just ourselves, we place in shade.

When daylight goes and dusk arrives, we pull our chairs out to the yard. We speak in whispers, drink our wine, and let the moon replace the sun.

The cricket sings his night-long song, the streetlamps flicker into glow. We breathe at last with open chests and feel the gifts of evening air.

And though we know the heat returns, we treasure every mild degree. We learn to wait, we learn to rest, we learn to praise the simple breeze.

So when the heat lies thick and still, we find our ways to carry on: with shade and water, rest and calm, until the burning sun is gone.

  • Short Story 913 - The Crimson Underpainting (UpA)
    2026/07/16

Hello everybody. If you want ALL the Stories/Content in FULL, please go to www.steveuk.blog Thank you.

Short Story 913 - The Crimson Underpainting (Upper Advanced)

Elias adjusted the focal length of his magnifying lamp. The subterranean vault of the national gallery was entirely silent, save for the mechanical hum of the climate control units. He was alone. The heavy steel door had sealed shut behind him, locking the outside world away. He did not need a physical metal object to enter; his biometric scan had granted him access.

Before him rested an antique canvas, attributed to a forgotten master. Elias applied a cotton swab soaked in a mild solvent to the corner of the artwork. He rubbed gently. The varnish yielded. Beneath the dull brown landscape, a flash of vibrant red emerged. It was not merely painted; it was saturated with a deep, visceral pigment.

He leaned closer. The red formed the shape of a hand, reaching out from the shadows of the underpainting. A chill crept up his spine. This was not a standard pentimento. This was a deliberate concealment.

Suddenly, the ventilation system ceased its droning. The abrupt silence was deafening.

Elias froze. He heard the distinct click of the vault door unlocking. He had not authorized any entry. Footsteps echoed on the concrete floor, slow and deliberate.

He quickly covered the canvas with a protective sheet. He stepped into the narrow alcove designated for chemical storage, pulling the louvered door shut just enough to observe the main room.

A figure emerged from the shadows. It was Julian, the chief curator. Julian held a heavy glass beaker filled with a highly corrosive acid. His expression was grim, his eyes fixed on the covered canvas.

"I told you to stop working on this piece, Elias," Julian said, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. "Some secrets are meant to remain buried."

Elias held his breath. He realized the historical significance of the hidden red hand. It matched the description of a stolen artifact, a relic that Julian had been secretly trafficking. The canvas was not just a painting; it was a map, a ledger of illicit acquisitions.

Julian approached the workbench. He uncorked the beaker. The sharp scent of hydrochloric acid filled the air. He intended to destroy the evidence.

Elias knew he had to act. He could not remain hidden while the artwork was destroyed. He reached for a pressurized canister of aerosol fixative on the shelf beside him.

As Julian raised the beaker to pour the acid onto the canvas, Elias kicked the alcove door open. He aimed the canister at Julian and pressed the nozzle. A thick cloud of blinding chemical spray erupted into the air.

Julian screamed, dropping the beaker. The glass shattered on the floor, the acid splashing onto his shoes. He stumbled backward, clawing at his eyes.

Elias sprinted forward, grabbing the heavy protective sheet and wrapping the canvas securely. He hit the emergency alarm button on the wall. Sirens immediately began to wail, and the heavy steel door began to cycle open as security personnel responded to the alert....

  • Short Story 912 - The Shadow Exchange (Adv)
    2026/07/15

Hello everybody. If you want ALL the Stories/Content in FULL, please go to www.steveuk.blog Thank you.

Short Story 912 - The Shadow Exchange (Advanced)

Alex River wiped the rain from his face as he hurried through the crowded streets of the city centre. The neon lights reflected off the wet pavement, creating a dizzying pattern that matched the unease in his chest. For weeks, he had been receiving coded messages on his secure device, warnings about a hidden operation that could destabilise entire economies. As a data analyst specialising in financial patterns, Alex had uncovered irregularities that pointed to something far more dangerous than simple fraud.

The latest message instructed him to go to the central plaza at exactly eleven o'clock. "Bring the evidence. Trust no one," it read. Alex carried a small drive in his jacket pocket, loaded with files that showed transfers of vast sums to unknown accounts. He had debated ignoring the summons, but curiosity and a sense of duty pushed him forward. The air felt heavy with tension, every passer-by a potential observer.

He arrived early and positioned himself near a fountain, scanning the faces around him. A woman in a dark coat caught his attention. She moved with purpose, her eyes meeting his for a brief moment before she looked away. Was she the contact? Or one of them? Alex's heart rate increased as he recalled the details from his research: a network of insiders manipulating markets for personal gain, willing to eliminate anyone who got too close.

Suddenly, his device vibrated with a new alert. "They know you are here. Move to the alley behind the theatre now." He obeyed without hesitation, slipping into the narrow passage where shadows swallowed the light from the main road. Footsteps echoed behind him, steady and deliberate. Alex quickened his pace, his breath coming in sharp bursts. He turned a corner and pressed himself against a cold brick wall, listening.

A voice called out softly. "Alex? Is that you?" It was the woman from the plaza. She stepped into view, holding up empty hands. "My name is Lena. I sent the messages. We do not have much time."

She explained in urgent whispers that she had worked within the organisation for years, gathering proof of their crimes. The group, known only as the Circle, consisted of powerful figures who used their influence to control information and resources. Lena had discovered plans for a major disruption that would cause panic and allow them to profit immensely. But someone inside had betrayed her, and now both she and Alex were targets.

"I need your files to complete the picture," Lena said, her voice steady despite the danger. "Together we can expose them."

Alex hesitated. Trust was a luxury he could not afford. Yet her details matched what he had found independently. He handed over the drive. As Lena plugged it into her own device, a sound from the end of the alley made them freeze. Two men appeared, their silhouettes menacing under the dim light.

"Hand it over," one growled, advancing with a weapon drawn.

Lena reacted instantly, shoving Alex towards a side door. "Run! I will hold them."....

  • Short Story 911 - The Black Beach (UpI)
    2026/07/14

Hello everybody. If you want ALL the Stories/Content in FULL, please go to www.steveuk.blog Thank you.

Short Story 911 - The Black Beach (Upper Intermediate)

The sea was not blue. It was a heavy, oil-coloured grey that moved without making a sound. Clara stood on the shore, feeling the wet, black sand sink beneath her boots. She had come to this lonely part of the coast to find peace, but the silence here did not feel peaceful. It felt like a person holding their breath.

There were no birds in the sky and no seaweed on the stones. The only thing on the beach was a long, low concrete wall that disappeared into the fog. Clara walked closer to the water. The air smelled of old salt and something cold, like a freezer that had been left open for too long.

She looked down and noticed a line of small, white objects near her feet. They were not shells. They were smooth, white stones, perfectly round, spaced exactly ten centimetres apart. They stretched along the water line as far as she could see. Someone, or something, had placed them there with great care.

A soft splash broke the silence. Clara looked out at the grey water. A pale shape was moving just beneath the surface, about twenty meters away. It looked like a wide, flat hand, but it was the size of a car. It did not swim like a fish. It crawled along the sea floor, making the dark water ripple.

Clara took a step backward. The black sand felt thicker now, pulling at her shoes like wet cement. She tried to lift her right foot, but it was stuck. When she looked down, she saw that the black sand was rising. It was slowly crawling up her boots, moving like a dark liquid against the gravity.

The pale shape in the water stopped. It began to rise. A long, thin neck grew out of the grey sea, followed by a head that had no eyes, no nose, and no ears. It was just a smooth, white face with a wide, wet tear across the middle. The tear opened, revealing rows of small, human-like teeth.

Clara tried to scream, but the cold air froze the breath in her throat. The black sand was up to her knees now, heavy and freezing cold. She pulled with all her strength, but she could not move an inch. She was fixed to the beach, becoming a part of it.

The white creature did not rush. It moved through the shallow water toward her, its long arms sliding across the black sand. As it came closer, Clara saw the other white stones on the beach more clearly. They were not stones at all. They were the tops of human skulls, buried deep in the black earth, perfectly spaced, waiting for the tide to come in.

The creature reached out a cold, wet hand and touched Clara's face. The black sand rushed up to her chest, closing tight around her ribs. The last thing she felt was the sharp bite of the teeth, and then the grey water rolled over her head, washing away her final breath into the silent sea.
