Short Story 913 - The Crimson Underpainting (Upper Advanced)
Elias adjusted the focal length of his magnifying lamp. The subterranean vault of the national gallery was entirely silent, save for the mechanical hum of the climate control units. He was alone. The heavy steel door had sealed shut behind him, locking the outside world away. He did not need a physical metal object to enter; his biometric scan had granted him access.
Before him rested an antique canvas, attributed to a forgotten master. Elias applied a cotton swab soaked in a mild solvent to the corner of the artwork. He rubbed gently. The varnish yielded. Beneath the dull brown landscape, a flash of vibrant red emerged. It was not merely painted; it was saturated with a deep, visceral pigment.
He leaned closer. The red formed the shape of a hand, reaching out from the shadows of the underpainting. A chill crept up his spine. This was not a standard pentimento. This was a deliberate concealment.
Suddenly, the ventilation system ceased its droning. The abrupt silence was deafening.
Elias froze. He heard the distinct click of the vault door unlocking. He had not authorized any entry. Footsteps echoed on the concrete floor, slow and deliberate.
He quickly covered the canvas with a protective sheet. He stepped into the narrow alcove designated for chemical storage, pulling the louvered door shut just enough to observe the main room.
A figure emerged from the shadows. It was Julian, the chief curator. Julian held a heavy glass beaker filled with a highly corrosive acid. His expression was grim, his eyes fixed on the covered canvas.
"I told you to stop working on this piece, Elias," Julian said, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. "Some secrets are meant to remain buried."
Elias held his breath. He realized the historical significance of the hidden red hand. It matched the description of a stolen artifact, a relic that Julian had been secretly trafficking. The canvas was not just a painting; it was a map, a ledger of illicit acquisitions.
Julian approached the workbench. He uncorked the beaker. The sharp scent of hydrochloric acid filled the air. He intended to destroy the evidence.
Elias knew he had to act. He could not remain hidden while the artwork was destroyed. He reached for a pressurized canister of aerosol fixative on the shelf beside him.
As Julian raised the beaker to pour the acid onto the canvas, Elias kicked the alcove door open. He aimed the canister at Julian and pressed the nozzle. A thick cloud of blinding chemical spray erupted into the air.
Julian screamed, dropping the beaker. The glass shattered on the floor, the acid splashing onto his shoes. He stumbled backward, clawing at his eyes.
Elias sprinted forward, grabbing the heavy protective sheet and wrapping the canvas securely. He hit the emergency alarm button on the wall. Sirens immediately began to wail, and the heavy steel door began to cycle open as security personnel responded to the alert....
