English Verb Tenses (Intermediate)

English verb tenses show when an action happens and fall into three main categories (Past, Present, and Future).

Each category uses four aspects:

Simple, Continuous (Progressive), Perfect, and Perfect Continuous — creating 12 total tenses.

Here are examples of all 12 English verb tenses using the verb "to walk":

Present Tenses

Present Simple: I walk to work every day.

(Habits, facts)

Present Continuous: I am walking to work right now.

(Actions happening now)

Present Perfect: I have walked to work before.

(Unspecified time / past experience)

Present Perfect Continuous: I have been walking to work for an hour.

(Ongoing action starting in the past)

Past Tenses

Past Simple: I walked to work yesterday.

(Completed past action)

Past Continuous: I was walking to work when it started to rain.

(Action in progress interrupted by another event)

Past Perfect: I had walked to work before taking the bus.

(Past action completed before another past action)

Past Perfect Continuous: I had been walking to work for a week before I bought a car.

(Duration of a past action before another past event)

Future Tenses

Future Simple: I will walk to work tomorrow.

(Predictions, promises, or decisions)

Future Continuous: I will be walking to work at 9:00 AM tomorrow.

(Action in progress at a specific future time)

Future Perfect: I will have walked to work by the time you call.

(Action completed before a future point in time)

Future Perfect Continuous: I will have been walking to work for a month straight by Friday.

(Ongoing action continuing up to a future point)

To choose the right verb tense, look at the timeline of the action and its duration.

Here is a breakdown of exactly when to use each of the 12 verb tenses.

Present Tenses

Present Simple: Use for permanent facts, daily habits, or scheduled events.

Example: The sun rises in the east. I drink coffee every morning.

Present Continuous: Use for temporary actions happening right now or around the present time.

Example: I am typing a message at this moment.

Present Perfect: Use for past experiences with no specific time, or past actions with present results.

Example: I have visited Paris twice.

(Time doesn't matter; the experience does).

Present Perfect Continuous: Use for actions that started in the past and are still continuing right now.

Example: It has been raining for three hours.

(It is still raining).

Past Tenses

Past Simple: Use for actions that started and finished at a specific time in the past.

Example: We watched a movie last night.

Past Continuous: Use to describe an action that was already in progress when another shorter event happened.

Example: I was sleeping when the phone rang.

Past Perfect: Use for the "older" of two past actions to show which happened first.

Example: The train had already left when I arrived at the station.

Past Perfect Continuous: Use to show how long an action was happening before another past event interrupted it.

Example: He had been studying for hours before he finally took a break.
