A carbon monoxide alarm. A wife found unresponsive. A death that raised questions her family refused to let go.
In September 2006, Kathy Wangler died from carbon monoxide poisoning in her Lima, Ohio, home. Her husband, anesthesiologist Dr. Mark Wangler, maintained that a faulty water heater caused a tragic accident. Investigators eventually developed a different theory.
In this episode of RNs & Red Flags, Amanda and Ashley examine the medical findings, the striking difference in Kathy’s and Mark’s carbon monoxide exposure, the soot testing, and the journals that became contested evidence. We discuss the prosecution’s case, the defense’s explanations, and the trial that ended with Mark’s aggravated murder conviction in 2011.
Through our nursing perspective, we explore the clinical red flags while remembering Kathy and the family left behind.
