  • An Alarm, a Death, a Murder - The Wangler Case
    2026/10/14

A carbon monoxide alarm. A wife found unresponsive. A death that raised questions her family refused to let go.

In September 2006, Kathy Wangler died from carbon monoxide poisoning in her Lima, Ohio, home. Her husband, anesthesiologist Dr. Mark Wangler, maintained that a faulty water heater caused a tragic accident. Investigators eventually developed a different theory.

In this episode of RNs & Red Flags, Amanda and Ashley examine the medical findings, the striking difference in Kathy’s and Mark’s carbon monoxide exposure, the soot testing, and the journals that became contested evidence. We discuss the prosecution’s case, the defense’s explanations, and the trial that ended with Mark’s aggravated murder conviction in 2011.

Through our nursing perspective, we explore the clinical red flags while remembering Kathy and the family left behind.

  • “If Anything Happens to Me, Look at Your Dad” | The Michele MacNeill Case
    2026/10/06

Michele MacNeill’s death raised questions her daughters refused to ignore. After undergoing a facelift in April 2007, the 50-year-old mother of eight was found unresponsive in her bathtub at her Utah home. Her husband, Dr. Martin MacNeill, appeared to be a respected physician—but the family’s search for answers revealed a disturbing story of deception, an affair, and betrayal.

In this episode of RNs & Red Flags, Amanda and Ashley discuss the medications prescribed after Michele’s surgery, the instruction to flush her remaining pills, and the warning she reportedly gave her daughter: “If anything happens to me, look at your dad.” We follow the daughters’ fight to reopen the investigation and the case that ultimately led to Martin’s murder conviction.

Join us as we examine the clinical red flags and the family’s determination to seek justice for Michele.

  • The Staircase Murder-Kathleen Peterson
    2026/09/29

Welcome to RN's and Red Flags! This is our first episode where we discuss the The Staircase Murder. In 2001, Kathleen Peterson was found dead at the bottom of a staircase in her North Carolina home, while her husband, novelist Michael Peterson, claimed she had suffered a tragic fall. Investigators, however, believed the blood-soaked scene pointed to murder, uncovering secrets and suspicious similarities to another staircase death from Peterson’s past. The controversial case led to a highly publicized trial, a murder conviction, years of appeals, and ultimately an Alford plea—leaving one haunting question unanswered: Was Kathleen’s death a terrible accident or a carefully concealed murder?
