It’s possible to hear God’s Word, agree with it, and even know it well without ever allowing it to change the way we live. In Luke 8:19–21, Jesus makes a startling statement about who belongs to His family: those who hear God’s Word and put it into practice. Following Jesus isn’t defined by our proximity to Him, how often we attend church, or how much Bible knowledge we have. The evidence of careful listening is obedience. God’s Word begins shaping our decisions, priorities, relationships, and everyday lives. The question isn’t simply, “Have I heard God’s Word?” but, “What has changed because I heard it?”

In Luke 8:22–25, Jesus and His disciples find themselves in the middle of a violent storm on the Sea of Galilee. The disciples are terrified. Jesus is asleep. But when they wake Him, Jesus simply speaks—and the wind and waves obey.

The point of this story isn’t merely that Jesus can calm the storms in our lives. Luke wants us to wrestle with the same question the disciples asked: “Who is this?”

Jesus doesn’t just have power over creation—He has authority over it because He is the One through whom all things were made. And if Jesus truly has authority over all things, then our faith in Him should extend beyond our salvation and into every part of our lives.

So when circumstances are beyond your control, the question remains: Where is your faith?
