In 1946, an eleven-year-old boy walked into a Tupelo, Mississippi hardware store hoping for a rifle for his birthday. His mother said no — and a store clerk handed him a guitar instead. That boy was Elvis Presley. He'd already spent his whole life in Tupelo by then, born there in a two-room house his father built, raised through real hardship, thirteen years before the family ever left for Memphis. The exact spot on the hardware store floor where he picked out that first guitar is still marked today.

In December 1931, a young pharmacist named Ted Hustead and his wife Dorothy bought the only drugstore in Wall, South Dakota — a town of just over three hundred people — in the depths of the Depression. Business was bad for five straight years. Then, in the summer of 1936, Dorothy had an idea while watching cars pass by without stopping: free ice water for hot, dusty travelers. It worked almost immediately, and never stopped — Wall Drug now pulls in more than two million visitors a year, still run by the same family, three generations later.

After the first flight at Kitty Hawk covered just 120 feet, barely under control, the Wright brothers needed somewhere closer to home to actually learn to fly. A Dayton banker let them use his cow pasture for free. Over 1904 and 1905, on that field, they turned a wobbly hop into a genuinely controllable airplane — many historians consider this, not Kitty Hawk, the real birth of practical flight. Their actual workshop ended up two hundred miles away in a Michigan museum. The field is still there.
