The major deal is part of a package of announcements expected to be made during Donald Trump's state visit to Britain.Google is set to invest £5bn in the UK in the next two years, to support growing demands for AI services.

The announcement, which comes as Google opens a new data centre in Waltham Cross in Hertfordshire, is expected to contribute to the creation of thousands of jobs, the US tech giant said.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves described it as a "vote of confidence" in the UK economy.

The news comes hours before Donald Trump lands in the UK for a state visit at which he and Sir Keir Starmer are widely expected to sign a new UK-US tech deal.

It also follows reports that ChatGPT parent firm OpenAI, and Nvidia, will also unveil billions of dollars' worth of investment into UK data centres this week.

The chancellor said the investment would boost research and development, capital expenditure and engineering.

Utah's Republican governor Spencer James Cox said Tyler Robinson was in a relationship with his roommate - who was in the process of transitioning - though his motive is unclear and officials have not said whether the relationship is relevant to their investigation.

The suspect accused of shooting dead right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk was in a romantic relationship with his transgender roommate, Utah's governor has said.

Tyler Robinson, 22, from Washington in Utah, is due to appear in court on Tuesday after Kirk, 31, was killed during one of his rallies at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.

Robinson is being held without bail on suspicion of aggravated murder, a felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, and obstruction of justice.

According to Utah's Republican governor, Spencer James Cox, he was in a relationship with his roommate - who was in the process of transitioning.

"The roommate was a romantic partner," he told NBC News's Meet The Press on Sunday. "We can confirm that that roommate is a boyfriend who is transitioning from male to female."

He added that the roommate has been "incredibly cooperative" and had "no idea that this [the shooting] was happening", but that Robinson has not been cooperating with police.

Charlie Kirk, an influential conservative activist and a close ally of US President Donald Trump, was shot dead while speaking at an event at a university in Utah.

Kirk was one of the most high-profile conservative activists and media personalities in the US, and a trusted ally of President Trump. He was a guest at Trump's presidential inauguration and a regular visitor to the White House.

As an 18-year-old in 2012, he co-founded Turning Point USA (TPUSA), a student organisation that aims to spread conservative ideals at liberal-leaning US colleges.
