概要
In 1538, a Holy League fleet assembled at Messina and Gominizze for an expedition against Hayreddin Barbarossa, bringing together Venetian, Papal, Habsburg Spanish, Genoese, and Hospitaller vessels near the Gulf of Arta and Preveza. The coalition counted 135 galleys and 62 other ships, including two galleons, with supplies and crews drawn from across the Mediterranean. ⚓️🔥 The decisive rupture came when Ottoman galleys emerged in small groups, then Barbarossa formed his fleet and drew the League into a confused attack near Capo Ducato on 27–28 September 1538. Delayed movement, shifting wind, and divided command prevented the Christian squadrons from fighting as one, and the battle turned into an Ottoman victory. The story is anchored in material details: fresh bread, vegetables, water, oars, sails, and ships; Hospitaller galleys carrying about one ox per day; and individual vessels struck by cannonballs or taking on water. One flagship sailed with its rear lanterns unlit, while Bosio’s account, later written, describes smoke and fire from Ottoman artillery. What remains uncertain is the relative weight of the causes of defeat: coalition disunity, provisioning limits, wind, formation problems, and Andrea Doria’s decisions all mattered, but the sources do not settle one final explanation. Jewels of History examines why the League could not act as one fleet, what Barbarossa’s movements were intended to achieve, and how the battle’s evidence shapes its memory.
