Everyone remembers the iconic scene from the movie Rocky in which Rocky Balboa bounds up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and looks over the city and raises his voice in victory - a victory he has yet to experience in reality, but one he is now prepared to encounter. This week, Rev. Jerry Andrews, Pastor Emeritus at First Presbyterian Church of San Diego compares and contrasts the difference between trying versus training, and examines how Paul distinguishes between the two when it comes to our lives of faith.

The Wizard of Oz is a beloved classic that seems to be in the childhood memory in all of us. It utters one of the most famous and enduring lines in cinema history, and that is the line, "There's no place like home." Dorothy repeats this line over and over and comes to apprerciate her place and time in life. For us as Christians, we understand the sentiment of this line in our spiritual lives. We have a deep desire to experience home. We also know that our ultimate home isn't a place, it's a Person.

It is the movie that brought people back to the theaters after the Pandemic: Top Gun Maverick is the movie we discuss this week. Pastor Karla implores us that our battle is not against each other, but against evil itself. Paul calls us to put on the full armor of God, but in Christ, we already have the armor on. It's just a matter of us realizing it, and understanding its usefulness for our lives. True victory involves more than just our skill, it involves obedience to God's call and the right equipment.

As the history of the United States from the 1950s to the '70s unfolds from the perspective of an Alabama man with an IQ of 75, who yearns to be reunited with his childhood sweetheart. This week, Parish Associate, Rev. Dr. Chris Lenocker delves into the classic movie, The Shawshank Redemption. Pastor Chris examines the journey of banker Andy Dufresne who is wrongfully convicted of mudering his wife and sentenced to life in a harsh prison. Over the next two decades, he befriends fellow inmate Red, survives rampant corruption, and covertly digs a tunnel to freedom. In following Andy Dufresne's journey, we discover what true freedon is for us as followers of Christ, and that no matter how strong the chains that bind, the gospel offers freedom from within.

This week, Worship Leader and Digital Content Producer, R.O. Smith shares with us about the popular, fantastical animated film K-Pop Demon Hunters. What was it about this story that resonated with so many people? R.O. looks at the commentary this movie played regarding the most basic question we are in search of in life: Who am I? (Identity). We ask the question this week, "From where do we start?" Because of Jesus Christ, and his obedience and sacrifice on the cross, we can have the confidence to start from the good! All we have to do is trust Him and that what he says about us is true.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring begins the epic journey of Frodo, a young, small, seemingly insignificant hobbit, as he sets out to help save his world from the further spread of evil. Epic narratives like The Lord of the Rings resonate so deeply with us because their heroes are often ordinary people—unlikely figures who remind us of ourselves. Pastor Karla connects the story to our lives by pointing out how it is hard feeling small in such a big world. God is with us in the adventure so we don't have to carry the whole quest alone.

We are jumping into a new series on Jonah. The book of Jonah isn't primarily about a fish--it's the story of a faithful God pursuing a wayward heart. Through Jonah, we will learn together about God's relentless mercy for everyone. Sometimes God sends storms not to punish us, but to rescue us.

God's mission is to redeem, not to destroy. The story ends with a question because the story continues with us.
