One of the first things Jesus did in his public ministry was invite people to become his disciples. In the first chapter of John's gospel, he used the phrase "come and see" as part of that invitation. To "see" means to observe and listen within a specific real-world context and this fall we will specifically be looking at the character of the land in the Bible.

In the story of Lot and Abram, we see the easier life being compared with the harder, yet God's promise remains with Abram. But it is strange that in the choice, Abraham had a say in the land chosen. And yet, he essentially "passed" the choice to Lot. Why? The text makes it clear that visually the choice seemed pretty obvious, which is why Lot chose the Land he did. So was there something else going on? As we will hear, Pastor Karla reveals how faithfulness is formed in uncomfortable places.

As we continue to study the land as "character" in the Bible, we examine how immediately following the call of Abram, two verses later, there was a famine in the land. Why? What did this mean? Why was the land constantly having famines along with other issues. The week, Pastor Karla talks about how famine reveals the limits of the land to invite dependence on God. Staying long enough in hard seasons to learn is a difficult task.

In the first sermon of our Fall Series, Pastor Karla opens a familiar passage, but points out an odd piece of the story that probably none of us have stopped to examine deeper...The tree of Moreh at Shechem. It is through this often overlooked part of the passage that reveals how God calls Abram to a specific land. So what does the location of this land tell us about God's desire for His people?

This week is our last week in the Cinema Sundays Series. Our Director of Men & Youth Ministries, Ryan Silvia, closes out the summer with the epic journey of a young moisture farmer turned Jedi named Luke Skywalker. In the movie Star Wars: A New Hope, Ryan discusses how in a universe of shadows, Christ is always the light that dispels the darkness. And as his followers, we are to identify the beauty and hope of Christ in everything we see and do.

In our movie this week, A Beauitufl Mind, we see the thin space between reality and delusion. When we look at Scripture there are many of these "thin places" between our phyiscal reality and divine reality. In our Bible passage this week, Pastor Karla examines how the gospel restores how we see our reality, and God's truth replaces our illusions.

This week, we look at a movie that became popular, first, on the theatrical stage - Les Miserables. Les Miz (as it is commonly refered) is first and foremast a parable. A story that is not true or historical, but invites the listener or watcher into it in such a way that the audience wishes it were true because it is relatable. It also leads the audience to take a step of action. Jesus does the same with his parables that he tells. Pastor Karla conveys to us how God reaches us at your worst so He can lift us into our best.

Everyone remembers the iconic scene from the movie Rocky in which Rocky Balboa bounds up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and looks over the city and raises his voice in victory - a victory he has yet to experience in reality, but one he is now prepared to encounter. This week, Rev. Jerry Andrews, Pastor Emeritus at First Presbyterian Church of San Diego compares and contrasts the difference between trying versus training, and examines how Paul distinguishes between the two when it comes to our lives of faith.
