One of the first things Jesus did in his public ministry was invite people to become his disciples. In the first chapter of John's gospel, he used the phrase "come and see" as part of that invitation. To "see" means to observe and listen within a specific real-world context and this fall we will specifically be looking at the character of the land in the Bible.

In the story of Lot and Abram, we see the easier life being compared with the harder, yet God's promise remains with Abram. But it is strange that in the choice, Abraham had a say in the land chosen. And yet, he essentially "passed" the choice to Lot. Why? The text makes it clear that visually the choice seemed pretty obvious, which is why Lot chose the Land he did. So was there something else going on? As we will hear, Pastor Karla reveals how faithfulness is formed in uncomfortable places.

As we continue to study the land as "character" in the Bible, we examine how immediately following the call of Abram, two verses later, there was a famine in the land. Why? What did this mean? Why was the land constantly having famines along with other issues. The week, Pastor Karla talks about how famine reveals the limits of the land to invite dependence on God. Staying long enough in hard seasons to learn is a difficult task.

In the first sermon of our Fall Series, Pastor Karla opens a familiar passage, but points out an odd piece of the story that probably none of us have stopped to examine deeper...The tree of Moreh at Shechem. It is through this often overlooked part of the passage that reveals how God calls Abram to a specific land. So what does the location of this land tell us about God's desire for His people?
