このコンテンツについて
Today, I want to talk about a program that has transformed thousands of lives….the National Guard Youth Challenge Program. The program was the inspiration for my book and this podcast itself! This initiative is more than just an educational opportunity; it’s a second chance for young people who need it most.
Since its inception in 1993, the program has helped over 200,000 young men and women reclaim their futures. Operating in 30 states, districts, and territories, the Challenge Program provides a structured, military-style environment where cadets develop discipline, leadership, and responsibility.
So, Let’s talk numbers. More than 80% of graduates earn their high school diploma or GED, and within a year, 80% are placed in school, jobs, or the military That’s not just success—it’s transformation.
But how does this program stay viable? The National Guard Youth Foundation Board of Directors, which I proudly serve on, plays a crucial role. Leaders like Brig. Gen. Allyson Solomon, USAF (Ret) – President, General Errol R. Schwartz, General Frank Grass, and 12 other impressive leaders ensure that funding, oversight, and strategic planning keep the program strong.
Speaking of funding, the program operates through a 75/25 funding model, 75% federal funding and 25% state contributions This partnership ensures sustainability while allowing states to tailor the program to their communities.
For me, this program isn’t just statistics—it’s personal. My book, 'The Challenge: How 144 Letters Changed My Life, The Life of My Son, And Will Change Your Life Too', tells the story of resilience, hope, and the power of mentorship. I experienced first hand, as a father of an Oregon Youth Challenge cadet. His being part of the Challenge and my time as a board member with the National Guard Youth Foundation, has deepened my belief in the program’s mission.
Every young person deserves a chance to succeed, and the Youth Challenge Program is making that happen. If you want to support this life-changing initiative, visit **ngyf.org** and see how you can get involved. And, if you would like to reach out to me, I am ready and looking forward to assisting you.
That’s it for today’s episode of The Challenge Podcast. Until next time, keep inspiring, keep leading, and keep believing in second chances.
By the way, subscribing and/or liking my podcasts goes a long way in helping me get my message out! Thanks so much!
