The Memorias de Amor y de Guerra podcasts are weekly episodes of the audiobook of the same name, where Giacomo Buonafina brings to life the protagonist of Rafael Rosal’s autobiographical book. In this third episode, we’ll listen to chapters 4 and 5. Each podcast consists of three parts: an introduction to the week’s audiobook segment, the audiobook excerpt, and an informal, irreverent discussion between Buonafina—host of Radio Amplitud—and Rosal, where they exchange perspectives and compare experiences from opposite backgrounds. The point of no return begins. The eight future guerrilla fighters, whom we will call The Squad, split into pairs to embark on their challenging journey to Cuba. Álvaro travels alongside Neto, a 24-year-old university student with an Arab look and the physique of an American football player. To reach Cuba, The Squad must travel halfway around the world, providing a broader context for Guatemala’s internal conflict within the global events of the time.
