Welcome to the Full Body Scan Meditation.
This meditation borrows from a very old way of understanding the body: not as one fixed, solid thing, but as a temporary coming-together of qualities that are always shifting. Contemplative traditions have long described the body through four elemental qualities — earth, water, fire, and air — and we'll use that lens here, not as belief, but as a lens for paying closer attention.
Earth is the quality of solidity: bone, muscle, the sense of structure and weight. Water is cohesion and flow: the softness in tissue, the sense of things moving and adjusting rather than staying rigid. Fire is warmth: the quiet metabolic heat that's always present, usually unnoticed. And air is movement: the breath rising and falling, the subtle sensations that remind us the body is never fully still.
As we scan through the body together, the goal isn't just physical relaxation, though that will likely happen too. It's to actually notice these qualities as they show up — where you feel dense or grounded, where you feel soft or fluid, where warmth gathers, where breath and subtle movement are present. That kind of noticing tends to loosen the habit of thinking of the body as one static, unchanging thing, and lets us meet it instead as it really is: a living process, always in motion, worth this time and attention.
Find a comfortable position, let the breath settle into its own pace, and let's begin.
