In this final installment of The Occidental Tradition, recorded during Joseph Campbell’s 1973 visit to the Blaisdell Institute, Campbell turns toward the role of myth, symbol, and ritual in modern Western life.

In a wide-ranging and conversational exchange, Campbell explores the symbolic traditions embedded in Christianity, art, American history, and even the imagery of the dollar bill. He reflects on the gradual disappearance of shared ritual in modern culture, the enduring human need for ceremonies of belonging and transformation, and what can happen when that need is left without meaningful forms.

From the funeral of John F. Kennedy and the rituals of political life to football games, protest movements, religious imagery, and the work of artists and visionaries, Campbell argues that our symbolic inheritance has not entirely disappeared. The symbols, he suggests, are still all around us—we have simply forgotten how to see them.

In his closing commentary, host Bradley Olson considers what it means to live among the remnants of older symbolic worlds, and whether myth can still help us give form to the mysteries of death, grief, love, belonging, and the experience of being alive.

He also recounts a remarkable mythological wedding ceremony held in the volcanic landscape of Iceland. Drawing upon Norse symbolism, ritual, music, movement, and the natural environment, the ceremony becomes an example of how mythology can be lived rather than merely studied.

The conversation then turns toward education and Campbell’s belief that Western students should encounter Eastern traditions while also developing a deeper understanding of their own cultural inheritance. In this episode of Pathways with Joseph Campbell, we listen to a lecture Campbell gave at the Blaisdell Institute in Claremont, California, sometime in the mid-1970s. Speaking on what he calls “The Occidental Tradition,” Campbell explores the distinctly Western emphasis on the individual, the development of critical consciousness, and the courage required to follow one’s own path.

Campbell contrasts the role of the teacher with that of the guru, noting that Western education, at its best, is not about obedience or imitation, but about awakening judgment, responsibility, and the capacity to think for oneself. From Greece and Rome to the Grail legends of medieval Europe, Campbell traces a mythic lineage centered on the individual adventure: the call to enter the forest at the place where it is darkest, where there is no path, because any existing path belongs to someone else.

Along the way, Campbell reflects on education, ego, morality, Christianity’s encounter with Europe, and the danger of seeking wisdom without first living a life. This lecture invites us to consider what it means to become fully human, not by escaping the world, but by entering more deeply into the unique adventure that is ours alone.
