As a young child, he fled with his mother and baby brother from the Japanese invasion of Malaya in 1942; at 19, he served as an officer with the legendary Gurkhas in the jungles of Malaya; in his mid-twenties, he opened a spectacularly successful restaurant in "Swinging London" with others to follow; and founded a spiritually-based community on the Scottish island of Iona in his early thirties. His adventures had hardly begun.
