When a student with a disability is suspended from bus service, does the district have to provide an alternative way to get them to school? They evaluate a case out of Maine where a district’s decision to move a student to specialized transportation was challenged as overly restrictive. They also review practical tips for administrators to help determine whether the IDEA’s discipline rules apply, when to treat a transportation suspension as a change of placement, and how to ensure LRE considerations are factored into transportation decisions.
