  • OG Mailbag: Canes Offseason | LaMelo Trade Reaction | NC State & UNC Neutral Logic | World Cup Vibes
    2026/06/26

The parade routes through downtown Raleigh are clear, the hangovers have subsided, and the hard sports business reality of summer has officially arrived. On this edition of the OG Mailbag, Joe Ovies and Joe Giglio open up the floodgates on the OG Sports Phone. First up is the looming Carolina Hurricanes offseason. While the high of the championship remains, fans are already wrestling with Tom Dundon's ruthless, win-first roster philosophy. What happens to the blue line, and are we truly ready for the Brandon Bussi era in net?

Then, the phone lines shift to the Queen City fallout. Following their conversation with Walker Mehl, the guys answer mailbag questions regarding the true emotional and strategic impact of the Charlotte Hornets trading face-of-the-franchise LaMelo Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Naz Reid. With the summer schedule heating up, they examine whether authentic World Cup fever has legitimately gripped the casual American fan base. We round things out with follow-up thoughts on the historic NC State vs. UNC December basketball matchup and more...

  • Charlotte Hornets Trade LaMelo Ball | Keeping Up With Stanley Cup | UNC vs. NC State Neutral Site? | 06.25
    2026/06/25

A blockbuster LaMelo Ball trade shakes North Carolina sports. Joe Ovies breaks down the Charlotte Hornets' reset, an NC State vs UNC December showdown, and some Stanley Cup lore.

    TIMESTAMPS:
    00:00 - Intro
02:30 - NC State vs UNC neutral site
    06:00 - Don't get attached, Caniacs
12:00 - Dundon making the rounds
    18:00 - Housekeeping
22:00 - Walker Mehl on Hornets trading Ball
59:00 - Keeping up with Lord Stanley
    1:25:00 - Mt. Rushmore SZN
    1:53:00 - Hey Joe

Just when you thought the North Carolina sports landscape was going to quiet down for the summer, the Charlotte Hornets have officially executed a universe-altering trade, sending LaMelo Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Naz Reid and a mountain of draft capital. LockedOn Hornets and WFNZ host Walker Mehl jumps on the line to break down the complex mental framework of moving on from the face of the organization. While LaMelo remains a divisive figure nationally, Queen City fans genuinely loved his flash — but if this hard reset means consistent playoff basketball under the new regime, the fan base will eventually heal.

Then, we shift to the ice where the NHL offseason is officially underway ahead of the entry draft. Ovies issues a clear reality check to Caniacs celebrating the recent parade: do not get too attached to every face on this championship roster. Owner Tom Dundon has made it clear that his desire to keep winning far outweighs any local sentimentality, meaning "Business Tom" decisions are looming on the roster front. Plus, Carolina Hurricanes VP of Communications Mike Sundheim drops by the studio to pull back the curtain on the world's most famous trophy, sharing some behind-the-scenes stories about what actually happens during the Stanley Cup's local travel diary.

Finally, Demetri Ravanos jumps on the microphones to officially initiate summer "offseason protocols." The guys take a meta dive into sports talk industry tropes to decide what belongs on the definitive "Mt. Rushmore of Mt. Rushmore Topics." We wrap it all up by checking the temperature of a shell-shocked state fan base on the OG Sports Phone!

  • North Carolina's Omaha heartbreaks continue | Politics behind Brind'Amour's HOF snub? | NBA Draft | 06.23
    2026/06/23

Heartbreak in Omaha as UNC baseball falls short of a title. Joe Ovies and Joe Giglio break down the Tar Heels' collapse, Rod Brind'Amour's HOF snub, and the NBA Draft...

    TIMESTAMPS:
00:00 - More UNC CWS sadness
    12:00 - OG Sports Phone
    23:00 - Housekeeping
    27:30 - Brind'Amour HOF snub
43:00 - Roy Cooper OG Canes Correspondent
    1:03:00 - NDA Draft
1:12:00 - NCYSA Director Bill Furjanic
    1:23:00 - Hey Joe

The absolute high of a Stanley Cup championship parade has given way to a heavy dose of reality across the Triangle sports landscape. Joe Ovies and Joe Giglio lead off with total bummer in Omaha. The Tar Heels baseball program saw their momentum completely evaporate in a disastrous 4th inning against Oklahoma, culminating in a spectacular run to the College World Series title for the Sooners. While you have to give all credit to Oklahoma, it leaves UNC fans staring down a frustrating, familiar question: when is this perennially successful baseball program finally going to break through and capture a national championship of their own?

Then, we shift to the ice where the disrespect continues. Despite just coaching the Hurricanes to a Stanley Cup title, Rod Brind'Amour's 13-year wait for a Hockey Hall of Fame induction rolls on. The Class of 2026 committee announced its inductees — including first-ballot locks like Patrice Bergeron and Carey Price, but also raising eyebrows with the selections of Keith Tkachuk and Pekka Rinne. Joe and Joe parse the resumes: what gives with the continued omission of a two-time Selke winner and Cup captain while weaker resumes slide in? The guys explore the heavy politics in play.

Plus, a massive shift in the NBA landscape on the eve of the 2026 NBA Draft. The Miami Heat have officially executed a universe-altering blockbuster trade to land two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for Tyler Herro and a mountain of draft picks. We evaluate the draft-night fallout and what it means for the hierarchy of the Eastern Conference.

  • Erik Cole on Brind'Amour, offseason Stanley Cup protocols | UNC CWS | Is USMNT good!? | Dusty May to NBA | Lightning Round | 06.22
    2026/06/22

The parade routes are clean, the hangovers have subsided, and the Stanley Cup is officially making its rounds across the Triangle. Joe Ovies and Joe Giglio sorta kinda return to "normal" programming by tackling the massive backlog of national and local sports stories that took a backseat to hockey immortality. But there's plenty of hockey talk! The guys welcome former Carolina Hurricanes forward and 2006 Stanley Cup champion Erik Cole to the show. Cole shares his unique perspective on what makes a Rod Brind'Amour locker room tick, having played alongside Rod in the 2002 Final and won it all with Brind'Amour as his captain. Erik pulls back the curtain on the incredible, viral moment during Saturday's downtown Raleigh celebration where he and Rod stopped the parade route to embrace, beautifully bridging two legendary eras of franchise history.

We also check in with OG Senior Social Media Correspondent Graham Hill, who has provided boots-on-the-ground reporting of tracking Lord Stanley's exploits through bars and breweries all over the 919. But the show leads off with an extended Lightning Round covering a massive weekend of sports.

  • STANLEY IS BACK! Canes Party On Glenwood South | Maniscalco's POV From Vegas | Way Too Early Offseason Talk | 06.16
    2026/06/16

Lord Stanley is officially back in Raleigh! Joe Ovies and Joe Giglio are joined in studio by Mike Maniscalco and Cory Lavalette to break down an unforgettable championship week.

58:00 - Cory Lavalette on book, Canes offseason
    1:24:00 - Hey Joe

Has anyone slept since Sunday? The party officially ignited on Glenwood South on Monday night as the players made their triumphant return from Las Vegas, setting the stage for what will be a massive, unforgettable championship parade through downtown Raleigh this Saturday.
Canes TV play-by-play voice Mike Maniscalco joins the guys in studio to share his perspective from calling the Stanley Cup Final, taking listeners directly onto the ice and inside the room for the chaotic, emotional moments immediately after the team hoisted the Cup.

Plus, Cory Lavalette from the North State Journal drops by to gives a sneak peek into his upcoming book, Perfect Storm: The Carolina Hurricanes' Incredible Run to the 2026 Stanley Cup, releasing on June 30th through Triumph Books, detailing what it was like documenting this historic team in real time. The guys also look ahead at the macro landscape of this franchise. With a core featuring the lethal Hall-Stankoven-Blake line and a culture permanently cemented by Rod Brind'Amour breaking through as a championship head coach, everyone is in agreement: because of how this roster is structurally built, this feels like the absolute beginning of an era rather than the end of a window.

We clear out the phone lines on the OG Sports Phone to celebrate with exhausted Caniacs
