The Patriots stumbled to a 0-1 start, sitting third in the AFC East with analysts ranking them as low as 19th overall—but don’t count them out. While QB Drake Maye struggled with three interceptions and key injuries, the defense showed flashes, and the schedule ahead is manageable. The Jets, meanwhile, are flying high at 1-0. This week’s must-win showdown against the Steelers—also 1-0—isn’t just about pride; it’s about avoiding a deeper hole. With A.J. Brown sidelined and the pressure mounting, New England’s chance to turn things around begins now.

Patriots make a swift move, bringing back safety Elliott Davison to the practice squad just one day after releasing him — forcing them to cut veteran tight end Shane Zylstra to make room. Davison, 24, originally joined in September and got some preseason snaps but didn’t make the roster; now he’s back for a second chance. Zylstra, with experience across Detroit and Buffalo, is out as New England gears up for their home opener against Pittsburgh next Sunday at 1 PM ET. These roster shuffles are par for the course in the NFL as teams fine-tune their squads before the regular season kicks off.

Steelers defense is back in the spotlight as they face the Patriots, ready to unleash their pass-rush on a shaky Drake Maye. After dominating Atlanta with 10 pressures and 4 sacks, Pittsburgh’s front seven could again force turnovers and disrupt New England’s offense — just like last year. This time, they’re aiming to tighten up third-down stops and limit yardage, turning pressure into points and making it a long day for Maye and Co.

The NFL’s opening game drew its smallest audience in four years, plummeting 11% as the Patriots and Seahawks clashed in a Super Bowl rematch that failed to ignite the ratings.

Drake Maye’s shaky start to 2026 has NFL insiders sounding the alarm: after a brutal opening loss to Seattle—marked by three interceptions, including a game-sealing pick—Maye’s stats were dismal and his impatience costly. While he still showed flashes of mobility and leadership, the Patriots’ offensive line and lack of playmakers raise serious concerns as they face tougher defenses. Executives are calling it “coming back to earth,” and Maye must prove he can elevate his game under pressure or risk another disappointing season.

T.J. Watt delivered a monster performance in the Steelers’ season opener, torching the Falcons with an interception TD, two sacks, and relentless pressure—helping Pittsburgh win 21-13. The defense as a whole was dominant, led by Alex Highsmith (2 sacks) and Cam Heyward (3 pass deflections), proving they’re built to dismantle offenses at the edges. New England’s Mike Vrabel knows the danger all too well, citing Watt and Heyward’s five-year track record of forcing turnovers and disrupting QBs. The Patriots, reeling after a loss to Seattle and missing key WR A.J. Brown, face a daunting task at home—but turnovers could be the difference. Meanwhile, Watt’s off-field excitement is mounting: he and his wife are expecting their second child.

The Patriots return home to Gillette Stadium for their first Sunday showdown against the Steelers in a rematch of last year’s gritty 21-14 loss — and this time, they’re aiming to turn the tide. With Pittsburgh as the second of four straight playoff-caliber opponents on their early-season slate, New England needs a win to jumpstart their season. Historically dominant at home (6-2 vs. Pittsburgh), the Patriots have carved out playoff success against the Steel City squad, even if the all-time series leans Steelers’ way. This will be their 37th meeting — and their first-ever regular-season game at Gillette was also against Pittsburgh, back in 2002, when they pulled off the upset. Can they repeat that magic? The stage is set for a high-stakes homecoming.
