  • The Battle of Pine Creek with Dr. Ryan Booth
    2024/01/30

And we're back! Today we have a conversation with Dr. Ryan Booth about the 1858 Battle of Pine Creek. Famously, this battle was lost by then-Major Edward Steptoe, who was defeated by the Native American tribes on the Palouse. We discuss the state of relations between Native Americans, white settlers, and the US Army during the 1850s, the Battle of Pine Creek, and the ensuing campaign of retribution by Colonel George Wright.

We also discuss how the history of this conflict was viewed in the decades following the Indian wars of the mid-19th century, and how those views have changed in the recent past.

    Mentioned:
Hang Them All: George Wright and the Plateau Indian War by Donald Cutler

A good overview of Hang Them All in Washington State magazine

    Also strongly recommended:

Landscape Traveled by Coyote and Crane : The World of the Schitsu'umsh

The first two chapters of: Plowed Under: Agriculture and Environment in the Palouse The whole book is very good, but the first two chapters in particular deal with the geology and geography of the Palouse, and the history of Native American tribes in the area.

  • Everybody Reads 2022 with Beth Piatote
    2022/10/21

"From all time, for all time- these are our ancestral homelands..."

This month it's an absolute privilege to have Beth Piatote join us for a special podcast episode. Beth is the author of The Beadworkers, the 2022 Everybody Reads selection. Please visit http://www.everybody-reads.org for a full schedule of events, discussion questions and read-alikes.

Beth Piatote's story collection The Beadworkers grounds its stories in the landscapes and lifeworlds of Native Idaho and the Northwest, exploring the inventive and unforgettable pattern of Native American life in the contemporary world. Told with humor, subtlety, and spareness, the mixed-genre works of this short story collection find unifying themes in the strength of kinship, the pulse of longing, and the language of return.

Everybody Reads encourages residents from across the Palouse and Lewiston-Clarkston Valley to read the featured title, discuss it with others and attend an event in their community. This year's events will be held from November 1 – 4. You can find a full calendar of events on the Everybody Reads website.

Residents can pick up their copy of The Beadworkers at local libraries and bookstores!

  • The Lost Women of the Library
    2022/08/25

This month we're pleased to welcome Donna Potts to the podcast to discuss the history of the library- and specifically the amazing group of women who founded the library.

Listeners will know that we had local historian John Anderson on the podcast in June to discuss the history of Neill Public Library, but he did not have nearly as much information on the library's founders as he would have liked. Donna has found such a wealth of information and we're so happy she was able to write her article and come on the podcast.
