We are currently on hiatus! We're looking at finding the time to create new episodes in the midst of all our efforts to be the best library we can be. All of the episodes will be up through the end of 2024, and we'll make a decision on the future of the podcast in early 2025. If you have feedback, please get in touch- library at neill-lib.org or just stop by anytime. This is the official podcast from Neill Public Library, proudly located on the Palouse in Pullman, Whitman County, Washington, USA. Check us out on the web at www.neill-lib.org. We talk library events and programs, books, movies, and all things Neill Public Library. And just a little bit about Pullman generally, too.2024 アート 文学史・文学批評

  • The Battle of Pine Creek with Dr. Ryan Booth
    2024/01/30

And we're back! Today we have a conversation with Dr. Ryan Booth about the 1858 Battle of Pine Creek. Famously, this battle was lost by then-Major Edward Steptoe, who was defeated by the Native American tribes on the Palouse. We discuss the state of relations between Native Americans, white settlers, and the US Army during the 1850s, the Battle of Pine Creek, and the ensuing campaign of retribution by Colonel George Wright.

We also discuss how the history of this conflict was viewed in the decades following the Indian wars of the mid-19th century, and how those views have changed in the recent past.

    Mentioned:
Hang Them All: George Wright and the Plateau Indian War by Donald Cutler

A good overview of Hang Them All in Washington State magazine

    Also strongly recommended:

Landscape Traveled by Coyote and Crane : The World of the Schitsu'umsh

The first two chapters of: Plowed Under: Agriculture and Environment in the Palouse The whole book is very good, but the first two chapters in particular deal with the geology and geography of the Palouse, and the history of Native American tribes in the area.

  • Spinning Tea Cups- a chat with Alexandra Teague
    2023/11/29

For this episode of the podcast, we're chatting with Alexandra Teague, University of Idaho professor and author of Spinning Tea Cups: A Mythical American Memoir. She recently did a program at the library, which I was not able to attend, so I was very pleased when she agreed to have a discussion about her book. We discuss the importance of place, geography, migration, and the stories we tell ourselves and our families. I hope you enjoy the talk- I certainly did.

    Also mentioned in this podcast:

    The Welsh band Adwaith

Vinyl Leaves: Walt Disney World and America

Spinning Tea Cups at Neill Public Library

A brief (sanctioned) history of Holiday World
