Naplate, Illinois, was a village of roughly five hundred people beside the Illinois River when a tornado struck on the evening of April 20, 2004. A warning for LaSalle County had gone out at 7:08 PM; a trained spotter confirmed the funnel on the ground at 7:23 PM, two miles southwest of the village. This episode reconstructs the storm's northeast run at forty-five miles per hour, including its crossing of the quarter-mile-wide river without weakening, and the roughly ten minutes residents had to act. Surveyors rated the tornado an F3 on the Fujita scale, corresponding to winds between 158 and 206 miles per hour; later reanalysis under the Enhanced scale placed the winds near 165 miles per hour. The documentary follows the rescue effort, with the injured transported to hospitals in Ottawa and LaSalle, and considers why the village's mobile home park remains as exposed today as it was that night.
